Swim
Comments: Have to say that I am fairly proud of this swim. Really never stopped to do breaststroke to get my berings. Relied totally on sighting every five to eight strokes or so. Stayed on course well. Felt like I swam into people a lot and got swam into, but the water was kind of murky, so you really couldn't see. Never felt stressed in the swim. What would you do differently?: Not much, go faster I guess Transition 1
Comments: T1 was long run from the lake. Felt like a good 300-400 meters. Really shaky getting out of the water, took a little while to get my legs under me. No problem getting shoes, helmet on ... went out pretty quickly. Bike
Comments: OW swims really sap my legs for the first part of the bike. Felt like I couldn't get the pedals going. Only averaged just over 20MPH for the first five miles of pavement. Oh, and the 1-mile dirt road that you have to ride on at the start and the finish ... I kind of enjoyed it. It was a little dicey in sections were the sand had built up, but for the most part you could really keep up your speed on it. I averaged 18 MPH going out and 19 MPH coming back on the dirt section. The only bad part was right at the transition entrance were the sand was deep and I almost went down. But I just got off the bike and ran it to the dismount line and into T2. What would you do differently?: I have to figure out how to get out of the water in better shape for the bike. My legs were lead for the first few miles and finally loosened up for the last 10 miles or so. Transition 2
Comments: Somebody racked their bike in my spot. Had to rack it away from my stuff. Pretty inconsiderate if you ask me. Run
Comments: Wow ... here is were it fell apart for me. Not sure why but this run sucked big time. Felt like I was going to throw up on the first loop and had a really bad side stitch that wouldn't ease up. Usually, I have some breathing techniques that work well to get rid of the stitch, they didn't work today as it was with me the whole time. Felt like I was just shuffling along for the most part. Never really ran very fast as evidenced by my time and an on a flat course like this I am capable of a lot better. Thought I would break 22 minutes on this course, but I was off by a mile obviously. Need to figure out something about eating before the race. My stomach never feels right starting the run. Also, I just have to do more bricks. I run a couple times a week and usually pretty fast, but it is nowhere near the same as the Swim - Bike - then Run combination. What would you do differently?: Run faster ... probably wasn't possible today. Post race
Warm down: Water. What limited your ability to perform faster: The run. Not sure why I was so bad and why I couldn't shake the side stitch, but it really held me back. I am a better runner than a 26-minute 5K. Event comments: As if my run wasn't bad enough, when I went to check on the preliminary results, I saw I got slapped with a USTA Penalty (My First). Seems they didn't like the placement of my GYM BAG in the TA. I had set it out of the way inbetween two racks and apparently that is a violation. So those extra 2:00 cost my a 2nd place in my group, dropped to fifth with the penalty. I guess I'll know better next time. Seems a little picky to me though. Last updated: 2009-06-09 12:00 AM

Stayed overnight in Florence, SC. Got up early, had a bagel with PB, drove about 10 minutes to race site.
Ran a mile around the lake ... felt fast (more on that later). Also got in the lake and swam around a little bit. Definately eases the tension of the OWS for me.
