Total Time = 1h 50m 31s
Overall Rank = 37/57
Age Group = Women 45-49
Age Group Rank = 2/2
Pre-race routine:

Hubby drove. Stopped off @ McD for my usual coffee and muffin.
Event warmup:

Not much, but lots of walking between transition & registration area.
Run
  • 26m 55s
  • 4.5 kms
  • 05m 59s  min/km
Comments:

Duathletes are crazy fast runners. Had to work hard just so I won't be last. Different surfaces and terrain make it difficult for me to get into a rhythm.
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Very long transition from run to bike.
Bike
  • 53m 1s
  • 27 kms
  • 30.56 km/hr
Comments:

Used my disk cover. It's a little heavy relative to my normal wheels, but they say aero trumphs wt any day. Actually, the extra wt may have contributed to extra stability. I was able to stay mostly aero, except for a couple of short hills and corners. Some parts of the roads were quite rough with potholes if you're not careful. Passed a few people.

Turned out I'm 5th overall women on the bike. Yay!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Run
  • 27m 32s
  • 4.5 kms
  • 06m 07s  min/km
Comments:

Similar to firt run, the different surfaces and terrain make it difficult for me to get into a rhythm.
Post race
Warm down:

Stayed afterwards to practice OWS. In retrospect, it was a good decision to switch from tri to du last wkend. I couldn't last 5' in perfect 70F calm water; it would have been ugly if I tri'd last wk. Panic attack and I couldn't breathe and water leaked into my googles. And this is when I'm just trying to swim to the first buoy where the swim starts! I need at least 6x OWS in the next month and a half before I'm ready for my tri, I think.

Event comments:

Did not stay for post race activities due to prior commitments.
Duathletes are FAST runners. In a typical triathlon, I rank worse in swim, better in bike and best in run. In a typical duathlon, I always rank worst in first run, better in 2nd run, but best in bike; and this race is no exception. I think I'm a better runner, but not against duathletes. Most of them can run sub5 on trails, I can run sub5, maybe one day on paved downhill surfaces, like Sporting Life 10K. I'm not such a good cyclist, but I came in 5th overall women on the bike today! Must be the disk wheel!! I've come to the conclusion I prefer duathlons over triathlons, at least until I get over the panic attacks during OWS.
(PS - overall rank includes men, wish they'd sort it properly to be women only)
