Age Group Rank = 3/10
Swim
  • 16m 4s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Rest of wave swam wide right. Held pretty straight line to the buoy, though I did notice early on I tended to drift towards the group, so I made a point of sighting more to keep myself on track. Couldn't sight well on the finish and almost overswam it.
Transition 1
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

3rd in A/G; 11th O/A. Had to stop for a kid standing on the matt, struggled a bit getting feet in shoes, but overall good time for me. Short Transition.
Bike
  • 50m 18s
  • 17 miles
  • 20.28 mile/hr
Comments:

Great bike course. I should have really bombed this course, but my lack of training showed. Near the end of course the o/a female winner and a 46 y/o kept passing me on the decents and I would pass them back on the hills.
What would you do differently?:

Been riding only 1x per week. Trainer only. Pretty structured workouts, but my lack of tempo rides (w/group) is still showing. Not where I was at this time of year. Though I think I've finally gotten the hang of effective pacing. Need more group rides.
Transition 2
  • 00m 34s
Comments:

2nd A/G; 11th O/A.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt great coming off bike but immediately started cramping in my calves. Kept a solid consistent pace and passed the 46 y/o (who kept passing me on the downhills on the bike) for good right out of transition. Getting HEED at 1/2 way point alleviated the cramps, but they came back worse. Getting one more cup of HEED didn't really help. For a few seconds I debated sticking to my pace, or opening it up a bit. I opened it up, despite the cramps in my calves, and had a solid finish. Still haven't gone HARD in a sprint this year, but that'sa wise choice since I've never been able to put together a consistent training segment.
What would you do differently?:

e-caps. I went with Nuun and two gels today. Definitely need e-caps in hot weather.
Post race
Warm down:

Cooled off in lake. Cramps set in again and I got some bananas. cleared up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No tempo bike rides during training. Minimal bike time. No e-caps.

Event comments:

Great course. Fast bike and fast run combined with a longish swim makes this a must-do race, especially if you're a strong swimmer. While short on participants this year, this could be as popular as any race in the state. FS Series did great job.
