Swim
Comments: The swim ended up being my hardest event, which I did not anticipate. I have a problem of starting off too fast when I race. I started at a pace that was way too fast. That combined with the water temp slowed me down a bit. I was happy with my time. What would you do differently?: I am going to work on keeping my pace steady. That should ultimately improve my time because I won't struggle so much at the end. Transition 1
Comments: This transition was slow. I had no idea what my transitions would be like because I didn't practice them and this was my first tri. When I came out of the water, I was a bit worn out and lightheaded from the swim and my upper body was cramping a bit. These combined caused the transition to be on the slow side but I got through it and got the bike portion started. What would you do differently?: Be more careful on the swim to hopefully avoid the cramping and lightheadedness. Other than that I was satisfied with this transition. Bike
Comments: I finished this section significantly slower than I had planned. In training I was able to knock out 12 mile in 33 or 34 min. I even rode the race course twice in that time. I was trying to take it a bit slow to save my legs for the run but I ended up taking much too slow and adding 14 min to my time. What would you do differently?: Ride faster. I was missing my computer and as a result was not sure of my speed. I knew I was going slowly but not as slowly as it turns out I was going. The only fix for this is to make sure I have my computer and ride faster. Transition 2
Comments: This transition was quite easy. I don't own bike shoes. I rode the bike portion in my running shoes. All I had to do was rack my bike and go. I took it slower because I wanted to eat a granola bar and because I always run with a bandanna. Eating and putting on the bandanna took up 90% of the time here. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: This turned out to be my easiest and best event after starting out as the one I feared the most. I had no difficulty with this event. My usual 5k time is 32:30, so I wasn't much slower after swimming and biking than I am regularly. I enjoyed the run a great deal. What would you do differently?: Nothing Post race
Warm down: Had PB&J bagel, spent some time stretching, debriefed about the race with friends. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inexperience. Event comments: There was only one water station for the entire event. It was halfway through the run. There was also water and food at the end. Last updated: 2009-06-22 12:00 AM

This was my first tri so I wasn't sure what to expect. I arrived with my roommate who was also competing. We registered then set up our transition area. Once that was finished we walked down to the lake and checked out the water temp. It was 70 degrees. After that, we chatted with other people who were milling around, listened to the race briefing and started.
Stretched a bit but other than that nothing. Some kind of warm up would have probably been beneficial. I'll definitely be trying that out next time.
