Swim
Comments: I started number 697 out of 704. Was not certain about my actual swim time and ended up in the back. Next race I have a real time to give. Flet I could have done better if it was not a constant struggle to get around the person in front without colliding with the person come back in the same lane. Passed 15 people and had to tread a couple of times to wait for slot to get through. What would you do differently?: Turn in an accurate time so as to have better chance of being able to stretch out my stroke. This was a huge improvement from my first and only previous race. I had a 4.02 minute 100 meter pace then and reduced to 2.6. Transition 1
Comments: Took too much time putting on socks. Difficulty getting shoes in clips and getting out and on the way. What would you do differently?: Practice without socks and shoes on pedals already. Bike
Comments: Pedaled in a comfortable gear for majority of race and spun in little gears up hill. I improved my MPH from 11.7 to 17.2 from my first and only other race. Great improvement here. Very happy even if I'm still behind the curve. Not bad for a few months of training. What would you do differently?: I was too comfortable in my gears. Should have used a bigger gear more often. I did take advantage of downhills to get into a bigger gear and maintain for a while but should have stayed there until next hill. Transition 2
Comments: Had problem getting out of my clips at dismount area. Should have left quicker instead of grabbing gatorade from bottle in transition. What would you do differently?: Practice dismounting with shoes still on clips. Do not stop for an extra drink or two in transition when I only drank 1/2 my fluids on the bike. Practice running without socks and sliding into shoes already tied. Run
Comments: Did a good job of not trying to overdo it at the beginning and letting my legs settle in. Fought off irrational thoughts of stopping and walking and just kept a mellow pace. At mile 2 I lengthed my stride a little and started feeling pretty good. Had one of the coordinators tell my 500 meters left and started kicking harder. Turned corner saw finish line 200 meters away got HUGE smile on face and sprinted it out. Damn! That last minute of sprinting made all the training worth while because I was on an incredible high. Just have to remind myself at next weeks race that if I hang on til the end it will all be worth it. Improved from 11.43 minute mile to 10.3 minutes a mile. What would you do differently?: Might try pushing myself a little sooner. It was 99 degrees and very little shade and I did not want to push to hard. Need to learn to get out of my comfort zone a little if I want to improve my times on the next event. Post race
Warm down: Cold towel on neck. Water, Gatorade and a banana. Had one of the therapists stretch me out for a tip. What limited your ability to perform faster: My mind limited my performance. Have to learn to push beyond what is comfortable. Event comments: Thought they did a great job. Just not big on the swimming pool thing. I will enter the race again next year though as it was well organized. Last updated: 2005-08-22 12:00 AM

Rest day prior. Drove to site picked up packet and checked into hotel. Layed out equipment on towel and placed numbers on bike and singlet to insure I had all. Placed Gatorades in room fridge to fill bike bottle and drink in am. Asked for nearest Italian restaurant and had a nice pasta dinner with my wife. Good night sleep with early wake up. Had 1/2 cup of coffee, pwr bar and a gatorade for breakfast.
Walked a 1/4 mile to site and stretched out 20 minutes prior to race. Was sure to visualize entries and exits.
