Pre-race routine:

"Woke up" from a sleepless night at 3:50 and started getting dressed. I had my breakfast all set out so that I didn't have to do anything that morning. Breakfast consisted of 1 bagel w/ peanut butter, 1 Ensure and a Gu about 15 minutes before the race start.
Event warmup:

It was a prety chilly morning so I probably should have done something other than a few stretches before getting in the water.
Swim
  • 1h 08m 25s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

The start wasn't nearly as chaotic as I thought it would be. There were a few hits to the head and some people that tried to swim up my back but overall I would say that it went rather "swimmingly" hehe.

The other part that I was nercous about was the long 1 mile stretch. I thought that I would get unfocused and lose my concentration but that never happened. I made a conscience effort to focus on my form and it went by in no time.

For a longer swim report go here. http://mrtuesdaypants.blogspot.com/2010/05/race-morning-swim.html
What would you do differently?:

Since this is my only Ironman I don't know what a 2 loop course would be like so I'm not really sure what I would di differently.
Transition 1
  • 09m 20s
Comments:

T1 tent was a zoo. I think that if it hadn't been so chilly that morning and if I didn't have to try and put arm warmers on wet arms transition would have gone a lot quicker.
What would you do differently?:

hope for a warmer day that doesn't require anything else to put on other than socks.
Bike
  • 6h 47m 37s
  • 112 miles
  • 16.49 mile/hr
Comments:

I trained in Texas where there isn't much good climbing and I was able to prepare adequately for this course. So just becuase you don't have stellar climbign where you are don't pass on this race if you have a chance to do it.
What would you do differently?:

I hated the extra little loop that had to be done at the beginning of the first loop and at the end of the second loop. It was on a true bike path with some steep descents into sharp turns. It seemed a little dangerous and unnecessary since the loop was less than half a mile.
Transition 2
  • 07m 30s
Comments:

Smooth transition except that I snagged my tri shorts on my seat mounted bottle cages and nearly ate it.
Run
  • 4h 54m 55s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 11m 16s  min/mile
Post race
Warm down:

The post race food sucked. Cold pizza and soda.

I had to get my wife to message my legs afterwards because I couldn't find a position that didn't cause some muscle to cramp up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The difficulty of the course. I would like to do another just to see how it compares.

Event comments:

I have to say this is the best race since it was my first Ironman.

Course: The bike course was difficult. I've heard of everything from 4,500 to 7,000 feet of climbing but I don't know which is correct. All I know is that there was a lot of climbing but on the plus side there were some great descents as well. There are three bad climbing on the north portion that progressively get worse. I felt good on the first loop on them but they were significantly harder on the second loop. I can't really complain about the road surface that much. When you turn onto HWY91 it gets rough with tar patches and when you turn onto Cr-3184 it is older chip seal all the way up to HWY18. For a longer bike report go here. http://mrtuesdaypants.blogspot.com/2010/05/bike.html The descents on HWY18 were bomber. Without pedaling I topped out at 44mph. This was nice to have to either start the second bike loop or go into T2. Freshened up the legs a little bit.

Course: The run course is super tough. The first three miles have a moderate uphill grade and when you make the right hand turn it get steeper for about a half mile. From there it is all downhill to the turnaround. The downhill was nice until you realize that you know have to go back up it. Pacing is really important on this course and walking some of the climbs helped me out tremendously. For a longer run report go here.http://mrtuesdaypants.blogspot.com/2010/05/run-finish.html
