Pre-race routine:

Arrived at park at 5:30 am, woke up seven and three year old. They weren't pleased. Breakfast was bagel with PB and an orange gatorade.
Event warmup:

Swam some strokes in water before start. Not too much other than that, I was too anxious with this being my first tri.
Swim
  • 09m 42s
  • 586 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Considering that I didn't put too much time in the swim, I was pleasantly surprised, as were the people watching a 245 pound guy with no wetsuit finish before the majority of the people in his wave.
What would you do differently?:

I would focus more here and wear a wetsuit. I used to be a swimmer when I was younger and this could be even more of a strength for me than it was. Also, I probably got the HR high enough that it impacted the quality on my bike.
Transition 1
  • 03m 40s
Comments:

Turned about to be an average time. Struggled putting tri shirt on wet body. To be honest I was more concerned with taking in the experience, but I think I'll go sockless next time.
What would you do differently?:

See above. I'll have my shirt on underneath wetsuit.
Bike
  • 59m 57s
  • 15 miles
  • 15.01 mile/hr
Comments:

This is were weighing in at 245 bit me in the behind. I did well on the down hills and the flats but was slow on the hills. Vanilla Power Bar Gel tastes like cake batter, wish it would have kicked in earlier.
What would you do differently?:

I trained on the bike, but probably not enough over-mileage. Considering the shape I was in when I started though, I guess I can't complain. This will be a major area of focus for me prior to the next race. Got a 2 minute penalty (don't know why)
Transition 2
  • 00m
What would you do differently?:

Remember to put race belt on before attempting to leave.
Run
  • 30m 23s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Heat wasn't an issue. The fact that my legs felt like Twizzlers and my stomach felt like a shaken unopened bottle of coke was. This kind of ticked me off because the lungs wanted to run sub 9:30 pace, but my stomach forced me to walk a few times. Finished at a 10:08 clip and wasn't very winded. I don't think the course was 3 miles to be honest with you.
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged wife and kids drank water. Walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably my weight on the bike, which hurt me on the climbs. This is supported by the fact that my 165 pound friend who put no more than 100 miles in during training was a full seven minutes faster. Granted he runs marathons. My stomach, maybe it was the gel.

Event comments:

It started raining shortly after the finish and got cold. I was doing this with a bunch of friends so we went to one of their parents houses for a post race barbecue. At least I had the fastest swim leg of all of them.
