Age Group Rank = 4/20
Pre-race routine:

Avoided fiber for a few days before event. Last meal by 7PM the night before. Breakfast: 2 waffles w/ peanut butter and syrup + 1 yogurt and coffee. No sports drink before the bike leg.
Event warmup:

Missed the warm-up. Got stuck in the line to the potty and they closed transition at 8AM sharp. Just got my wetsuit on and had to boogie out. Swam for about 5 minutes while the first waves went out. Next time be sure to have warm up done at least 10 minutes before 1st wave.
Swim
  • 08m 15s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lake was clogged w/ swimmers. I had a couple people drafting off me and they were clipping my toes constantly. I had one guy swim right into me as he was veering off course. I had a tough time staying on my rhythm w/ all the people. I need to learn to get a bit more comfortable in traffic and how to draft myself.
What would you do differently?:

It may help to get a bigger jump out to the first buoy to avoid some slower swimmers.
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

I was really trying to move fast on the clip in and kept missing. Wasted a ton of time.
What would you do differently?:

Next time I need to be patient and get clipped in before I start peddling hard.
Bike
  • 46m 38s
  • 16 miles
  • 20.59 mile/hr
Comments:

Not nearly as fast as I'd like to have gone. I didn't have anyone to race w/ and I didn't have the self discipline to push the pace on my own. I was second guessing the wind too much.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

clipped out and road loose on pedals last several feet. Got off bike fast and into transition. I had too much junk in transition. Transition rank 77 overall and 9th in age group. I didn't drink any gatorade until I'd gone five miles and stopped drinking w/ about 5 miles to go. I think this helped keep my stomach settled.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure that I don't have so much crap in the transition area that I can't get my bike racked. Take my transition bag to the car once it is unloaded.
Run
  • 22m 36s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Key at the start was to avoid think how slow my legs were moving. I just used my breath as a barometer and kept moving until I felt warmed up. Felt good about 0.75 miles in and held pretty steady. Felt great w/ a mile to go and picked it up a bit. Nice kick from about a quarter mile out w/ good sprint at the finish. I still need to shave off 20s to get me on par for my overall performance.
What would you do differently?:

Skip drinking all together. I tried to drink and ended up w/ most of it in my nose. I don't need water for 20 minutes of running.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching as per usual with chocolate milk to reload. Skipped the post race meal.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mentally weak on the swim. Bothered by the traffic. Mentally weak on the bike. Need to push the pace on my own if there is no one to race with.

Event comments:

I wish they'd add a few more portopottys. Lines were way too long. Other than that, just great.
