The Ottawa Race Weekend
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 54m 31s
Overall Rank = 1770/8000
Age Group = 40/44
Age Group Rank = 208/399
Pre-race routine:

Bus ride to the start. Ottawa is such a neat town.
Event warmup:

Stretched as much as possible while standing in a big, big race chute. 8,000 people is a big crowd.
Run
  • 54m 31s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

My brother and I went out pretty quickly. It was a challenge dodging runners who were clearly not in the appropriate starting queue. And not to be sexist, but most were wearing pink.

The first water station was at 4K and snuck up on us. We weren’t in a real position to hit it. Just after 6K, my right calf started to go. Kept waiting for the water station at 7K which ended up being at 8K. Walked my way through it. Limped my way home in 54:31. The water station at 9K seemed utterly pointless.

What would you do differently?:

Not strain my calf. And not miss the 4K water station. But I just hadn't recovered enough to run the entire race without it cramping.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching and then walking to find a cab home. OK, limping.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Strained calf that I just could not get rehabbed in time.

Event comments:

Water stations were at 4K, 8K, and 9K. Oddly placed.
