Swim
Comments: Totally panicked after getting through the surf. I was thrashing and knew it. HR way up. Started outside as planned but current pushed me left early. I thought about quitting right there. Rolled to my back and gathered myself. Backstroked to the first buoy and by then had pulled myself together. Second half of the swim went well. I was shooting for 8 minutes but was in the water 10. Run to transition was way too long. Shed wetsuit at the waterline and carried it. What would you do differently?: Only trained in pool. No open water training was a big mistake. Should have spent some time in open water before the race. Transition 1
Comments: OK this T1 time was terrible but I have an excuse. It's really important to go to the bathroom before you put your wetsuit on. Had to stop and go at T1 and it cost me at least 90 seconds. What would you do differently?: Use the bathroom before heading to start. Bike
Comments: I'm a total novice on the bike so I was reasonably pleased at 15MPH into the wind and 20-21 with wind. No crashes, no close calls. Saw one elite on the stretcher early and witnessed a crash at the bike in on my lap 2 (their lap 3). What would you do differently?: Just need more training time on the bike Transition 2
Comments: Not bad. Could hear my kids screaming at me to "move it Dad". I always take forever to fuss with my laces. What would you do differently?: Had planned to swap my bike shorts for run shorts in T2. I forgot, pulled run shorts over my bike shorts and didn't realize until 5 minutes into the run when I figured out why I felt like I was running in a diaper. Should have just worn tri shorts. Run
Comments: About what I expected. Probably left too much in the tank. Still had good legs in the last mile. Soft sand was brutal What would you do differently?: Not find myself with three pairs of shorts on (suit, bike and run). Sell out earier in the run. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed some water, kissed my kids. Felt pretty good. What limited your ability to perform faster: This was my first triathlon. I only really trained for swim and bike for 6 weeks. I could have used another month. My goal was 1 hour 30 min. Finshed with 4 seconds to spare. Event comments: With the beach run, they need to synch the schedule with the tide table so there is more hard sand for the run. Last updated: 2009-07-06 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5 after a fitful night's sleep. Went to bed at 10 in the middle of a party downstairs. Oatmeal and a banana then in the car by 6 for the half hour trip to race. Ate half a bagle in the car. parked and put some air in my bike tires then walked a few blocks to set up transition. Felt ready for my first tri.
Not much. A quick swim to get the feel for the water
