Swim
Comments: The swim was difficult because I was scared about not being able to finish it. I had not done too much swimming to begin with, and I had not actually swam for a half mile in 1 go in open water before. I was always getting close, but never actually doing it. I also allowed the whole wave to go before me because I was afraid of getting trampled in the pack. Once I get more confidence and faster in the swim, I will want to try to bust out at the start. That definitely made a significant difference in my time, because I actually felt like I was swimming pretty good! Much better than a 17min swim time that I recorded. I never used a swim cap before and was pleasantly surprised when I noticed it added buoyancy to my head, which made it much easier to breath in open water. What would you do differently?: I think next time I might consider renting a wetsuit from a tri-shop because I noticed ALL elite people were wearing a wetsuit, and about 3/4 of everyone else was too. I bet it would make a pretty significant difference. Transition 1
Comments: I think it would have helped me to have a towel at my camp. I forgot it at home, and that made it difficult to change into socks. What would you do differently?: It would be cool to figure out if it's possible to race without socks and not get blisters. I tried doing it in training but got blisters really badly. It might be good to do some focused time on cementing a routine for transition. AND MAKE SURE YOU BRING A TOWEL NEXT TIME Bike
Comments: I think the running may have been my biggest strength, but the biking was definitely up there. I haven't been able to do too much hard training on the bike because I was riding with Ethan so much and counting that as bike training. I felt very good though. One important move I did was PUMP MY TIRES BEFORE THE RACE! That definitely made it easier to keep at 22-25mph for most of the ride. What would you do differently?: I think as I train for future races, I need to focus on training hard during my scheduled bike training sessions. Also, I want to make note that biking is the most time consuming section of the whole race, and it might be a good idea to focus hard on this one, after I get my swimming up to speed. Transition 2
Comments: I didn't know exactly what to do here. I had a problem too where I needed water but forgot to get some, and that set me back another 15 seconds or so. What would you do differently?: Next time, as you know that you are coming into the finish, take your feet out of the shoes and ride your bike in with your feet on top of them. That'll make it quicker to transition. Also, be aware of the water situation. Know whether or not they will have water ready for you at the transition area exit gate. Run
Comments: I thought I did very well here. I loved the run! The only thing was that I noticed I had a LOT of extra energy as I came towards the finish line. I really liked yelling battle cries at the end; that helped me extinguish that extra energy more easily. What would you do differently?: This will only come with practice, but I need to be better about using all of the energy available. I ended the race feeling I could go for at least another mile, which wasn't a good thing. Great job on my first tri. I don't feel like I need to focus the most energy on improving this area any time soon. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: lack of confidence in the race. It was reassuring to see so many people out there that I knew I could beat, but I'm always intimidated by those super ripped guys that are animals. I want to find out good ways to increase my speed in all 3 areas, I'm not sure what sorts of drills/exercises I need to be doing for that. Event comments: I really liked this race, it was such a good one to have as my first triathlon because there were people of all abilities there which comforted me through the whole process. Additionally, it was easy for mom and ethan to watch because the area around the transition area was very accessible to spectators. It helped a great amount knowing I had a small (yet very important) fan base. Also, it helped a TON to let everyone I knew know about my race because it encouraged me to keep working towards it. I woke up 2 hours before the race. I had one Nutrimeal Meal Replacement shake mixed with 1 scoop of protein powder and a peach as a solid food. I got coffee 30mins later, a double short americano so that I could drink it quickly. Overall, a great breakfast routine. I was full, and throughout the race I had no problems with feeling like vomiting.
I got 1 nalgene filled with H20+2FRS energy packets and drank half the bottle right before the race. I then watered it down and filled my bike bottle with it to get some water that had some electrolytes in it.
Overall, I was very pleased with my hydration that race. I think I might want to try JUST water, no electrolytes in the bike water bottle
My warmup was the stretch warmup from UW ultimate that was very helpful to do.
