Swim
Comments: I was nervous, as I put an aggressive time down for the seeding, put ended up doing exactly what I was supposed to, which was cool. The four guys behind me all looked like swimmers (aka: they all were a foot taller than me), so I just told them if they were going to pass me, just slap my ankle and I'd get out of the way. Thankfully, I was just having a lack of confidence in myself rather than a lack of ability, and did great. I went out too fast, but had a very solid swim. This was my best leg of the race. What would you do differently?: Start slower, be more consistent. Transition 1
Comments: Another slow transition...gotta work on these, though hopefully next year I will have the gear to assist in this process. What would you do differently?: New bike, bike shoes, no socks...need I go on? Bike
Comments: Again, I am slow on the bike. I started out quite nicely, but I just didn't have the horses at the end. Overall speeds were a little depressed, which makes me feel better, but I've gotta get the gear to be competitive. This was my worst section. What would you do differently?: Different bike. If I can pace myself better on the swim, I'll be able to control my breathing better on the first 1/3 of the bike, and that will help my overall race. This is the longest part of the race, both in terms of time and energy, so I really need this to be better to be a better triathlete. Transition 2
Comments: My chip (as well as half the top 50) didn't pick up this transition, so I don't know how it went. Wasn't that fast. Run
Comments: My run plus T2 was 21:11, which was much better than the last one, which was a surprise. The first half mile was good. Then, I had intestinal troubles (and that's as far as I'll go into THAT subject) which really slowed me down. I picked up speed at the turn-around, and really flew the last mile. I'd guess that my T2 was about 1:30, so my run was um...6:40 or something. That'd be okay. What would you do differently?: Need to work on speed. My run was at the pace I train at...I just wasn't training for speed right now, as I'm trying to get in enough miles for marathon training. Once I get a marathon under my belt this winter, I'll pay more attention to this part and really make it happen. This was my second best section. Post race
Warm down: Ate, drank, and was merry. Cheered on other BTers, had a great time meeting them, and even convincing another guy to join this site! Had a hilarious moment when Aaron (Jeepfleeb) and I were cheering on Patrick (pds006) when he was about to get into T2. We went nuts, cheering our asses, and Patrick couldn't help but look. Unfortunately, he looked right at the point where he had to get off his bike, or he'd get a penalty. We went from cheering wildly to screaming like little girls in terror that we'd screw up our friend's first race...but he figured it out one wheel rotation away from a penalty. It was like having 1 second left on a bomb. That made the day. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bike and overall conditioning. I'm in good enough shape to do these events, but not really race yet. I started serious training 6 weeks ago, I'm happy with how I am doing right now, but I can do much, much better. I called it that I would survive in at least 75 minutes, and that was, to the second, what I hit. That works in my book. Next season should be fun! Event comments: A good race, one I would definitely recommend. Plenty of volunteers along the bike course, everyone was helpful and encouraging. A good time was had by all. Got up at 4am again, was first person at the race...hey, when you go to bed at 9, what else are you going to do?
Tried to stay warm, as it was 54 degrees! I was wearing shorts and flip flops...I was damn near a tripopsicle before the race started! By the way, I am going to trademark tripopsicle. It's mine!
