Swim
Comments: Being aquatically challenged, I saw no reason to overly exert myself. Took it pretty easy. Average heart rate was 129. (Like I said...easy) Minimal contact. No one whacked me, I whacked no one. Life is good. Came out of the water at around 31:30. Had to run/walk about 300 yards to the transition area. Happy to see my bike was not the only one left. (Deep-seated fear I have being in the last swim wave.) What would you do differently?: Take swimming lessons as a child instead of learning how to swim at age 40. :-) Transition 1
Comments: No matter how much body glide and Pam I put on, I still have trouble getting my wetsuit off. But I bettered my previous T1 time by 11 seconds. Woo hoo! What would you do differently?: Slip someone in the crowd 5 bucks to strip my wetsuit off. ($10 if she's pretty) <-- PIG!!! Bike
Comments: It was weird biking with no cadence or speed info. I went medium to hard on the bike. I like flat courses, which this wasn't. But it wasn't too bad. I debated cassettes, and decided on a 11-21. (I'm not sure I so much "decided" or if I was just lazy and just kept the cassette that was already on.) There was one longer uphill I hand to stand up on. Spiked my heart rate. I hate it when that happens. Nutrition - one aerobottle of my own mix of Maltodextrin & whey protein (7:1 ratio) flavored with a bit grape Koolaid. A poor man's version of Sustained Energy. Sipped evenly through the course. Also, this was my first race with new (to me) wheels. Hed 3 tri-spokes. I like'em. I'm not sure how much difference they made, but I posted my fastest bike split. The wind wasn't bad, but there was some occasional crosswinds/minor gusts and I could feel it. The worst time was at the end of a descent. I was on my aerobars (guessing around 35 mph) and the bike got a little squirrely when the wind hit. Instant pucker - if you know what I mean. What would you do differently?: Replace my computer battery when the display starts to dim. Used my 12-26 cassette. Transition 2
Comments: Best T2 in my Age Group. I RAWK!!! I do a flying dismount, and I don't dilly-dally. (Maybe this is my way of making up for my slow T1's). What would you do differently?: Nada Run
Comments: Felt fine coming off the bike. Took one Hammer Gel right before mile 1 with a water chaser. Settled in for a steady pace. About mile 3 I start wishing I had done the Sprint. (A common theme everytime I do an Oly.) Things got a little tight at a couple of water stations with runners going both ways. At the mid-point turnaround I picked up the pace a bit. I'm a below average swimmer and an above average runner, so I can usually make up some time on the run. What would you do differently?: Nada Post race
Warm down: Checked my time. A PR for me by 16 seconds! Woo Hoo again! I'm not getting older, I'm getting better! Took the bottle of cold water they handed to me at the finish and mixed in my recovery drink. (My own recipe - I'd tell you what it is, but then I'd have to kill you.) Normally I'd take a cold shower at the park facilities to wash the lake cooties out of my hair, but they weren't working. :-( Sok I packed up and headed home, looking forward to an afternoon of laying on the couch and snoozing through the AT&T Golf Tournament. Life is good. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being an old, short untalented white guy with bowlegs and flat feet. Event comments: HFP does a pretty decent job. (This was my 15th tri with them). Last updated: 2009-07-09 12:00 AM

This is one of 3 "B" oly races I'm doing as I prep for an HIM in August. Drove up from Cincinnati. On the way - PB&J and coffee - breakfast of champions.
Laid out transition area. I was one of the early ones, so space was not a problem. In deference to my tri brothers, I keep my area to a minimum. (Pet peeve - people who think just because they get their early they can take up as much room as they want. C'mon. How much room do you need for a helmet and a couple pairs of shoes? You know who you are.)
Saw that my bike computer was dead. :-0 I KNEW I should've replaced the battery.
Attended pre-race prayer (God, please don't let me drown.)
Swam just a bit so I could feel what the water temp was. Not too bad. Stretched a bit. Watched everybody else go off since I was in the last (geeze) wave.
