Age Group Rank = 1/10
Pre-race routine:

Did the opposite of what I normally do. Normally, I avoid cereal (which I eat most mornings) and have toast w/PB and no coffee. Decided I would just eat the ceral as usual and have a cup of coffee.
Event warmup:

Ran about a mile around the park, felt good.
Swim
  • 05m 49s
  • 300 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good swim. Passed a few people, good rythm throughout the swim. Breathed to the left the whole way.
Transition 1
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Pretty quick T1. No issues to speak of.
Bike
  • 32m 29s
  • 10.8 miles
  • 19.95 mile/hr
Comments:

First race with Zipp 404 wheels. Definately felt fast, and the tubulars definately give you a better ride. Did a lot of passing, stayed aero on all but the one big hill. Good ride, got a little dicey at times trying to pass.
What would you do differently?:

Probably a little too fast on first section, legs got a little heavy the final few miles.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

This felt a little slow. Had trouble racking the bike. Running to the transistion area was kind of slow.
Run
  • 20m 15s
  • 2.6 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Went out at a moderate pace, really picked it up from there until I hit the hilly part over the last mile. Kind of suffered from there and really had to take my foot off the gas. Was reduced to a quick shuffle up some of the steep inclines over the final 1/2 mile or so. Finished strong over the final section. Passed quite a few people on the trails (they basically had to pull over to the side of the trail to let you by it was so narrow in spots).
What would you do differently?:

Maybe cool it a little over the first part of the run to have a little more left for the last mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water ... by this point it had gotten really hot out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really, the run course was definately a challenge compared to others I have done. Don't mind the trails, but the quick ups and downs definately wear on me.

Event comments:

This is a very small, low-key race that caters to beginners. Seemed even more low-key this year than usual for some reason. I really enjoy the course, so this is the third consecutive year that I have done this race. Finished 37th the first year, 16th last year and 4th this year ... pretty good progress. It is a nice change from some of the bigger races in the area. Kind of shocked by my high overall placing, but in a small race like this, you never know who did or didn't show up.

Probably as close as I'll ever come to being first overall in any race.
