Pre-race routine:

I had the day off yesterday so I took the time to get everything ready to go...for a change. This was a train-through race coming off a 25 hour week including yesterday's workout: 50 mile bike, 9 mile run, 500m swim.

I woke up at about 4:30 and took a quick rinse, loaded up Ramone and we headed up to Leadville (up to 10,200 feet). Not only did I have everything organized, the car was ready to go too and I only had a 30 mile drive. What a nice change from my typical work until 3AM, then drive 140 miles to Boulder on no sleep! I was super relaxed and for once rested and not stressed.

I arrived right as the transition area opened, got my bib number and body marking done then found a sweet transition spot.
Event warmup:

No warm up. I did however spy the guy that I would have to beat. At first I totally thought it was my buddy Kilo Dave (tall, lean and mean), but with spanking new bike: A Trek Equinox with full DA and Blackwell Research wheels. Turns out it wasn't Dave but his "twin" brother. Since his transition was close to mine, I introduced myself we chit-chatted about racing and whatnot. I was thinking, damn... there goes my chance at the W.

After a while, he went to warm up; I fiddled about pretending to be busy with my transition spot. Why do I get so intimidated?

Officially my swim was 9:58 but that includes the run to transition. 46th on the swim. 7 seconds faster than last year!

When I got to the pool I was assigned a lane with 4 others. Since one guy predicted he would swim in about 6:30, we let him go first, followed by a girl, then a young guy, then me. Go figure.

Right away, I felt winded and out of form. I just started counting laps... and I lost count of how many times I was lapped. My turns at the wall were sloppy and once or twice I forgot to get air. D'oh. As I finished the 10th lap I could see a guy putting a pull buoy in the water. I thought this was my signal to get out but it was it was actually the heads up to do one more length and then get out! I'm used to a meter pool and 10 laps is 500 meters. This was a yard pool. No biggie, I just jumped back in and finished my swim. I was surprised to see that I was under 10 minutes. I felt like I was swimming much slower. hmmm.
What would you do differently?:

Fastest bike today (by 2 seconds) 24 seconds faster than last year.

I got on my bike and got going pretty quick since the first few miles are downhill. Put my Garmin on since my bike computer is not working, and then got down in the aero and started hammering. I was mostly out in no-mans land with no one really to race. I just passed people as I approached them and occasionally glanced at my watch. My speed looked good, but I felt tired the whole ride. I tried to go as hard as I could during the first portion, because at about mile 6 there is a short but steep hill that stops nearly all of your momentum. After that there is a short cruising section before the turnaround. Heading back was into a substantial headwind for a few miles followed by a hard right which leads you to the long uphill finish. The Garmin had me averaging about 24.3 into transition, so I was very happy with my ride.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I rode this course well.

This transition was sort of messed up because the bike rack was moved and it was hard to get my bike racked. Also, all of my stuff was buried under another person's stuff. I don't know how that happened but it was annoying. I don't think all of this cost me more than 5 seconds however.

2nd fastest run
I ran well. I didn't feel well. Just like on the other legs, I felt like I was struggling.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder in the first mile to make up for the long uphill finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim. But overall, a great race.

Event comments:

This is a first class race. I wish more front rangers would come up. Yes it is a hard course, but it is a fun course. I was thrilled to get the W today... it hasn't happened in a while.

After looking at the results, I beat number 2 by 11 seconds. My transitions totaled 1:04, number 2's transitions totaled: 1:28, so there you have it!
