Swim
  • 08m 23s
  • 440 yards
  • 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

I did not listen to Sharon's announcements as I was still trying to pull on a wetsuit for the first time ever. If I had, I would have known the mens wave 3 had too few men and therefore would start in wave 2. I learned this 10-20 seconds after wave 2 took off and I was the only guy still on the beach (except one guy who wanted to swim w his girlfriend). So I did not learn anything about how much time is saved with a wetsuit which was the hope. Next week. It felt real hard to breath starting about half-way thru the swim. Went out too hard to catch back up??
What would you do differently?:

Listen to pre-race announcements.
Transition 1

Comments:

Messed up the whole watch thing with a botched start. So I do not have T1, T2 times. But seemed ok.
Bike
  • 26m 23s
  • 5 miles
  • 11.37 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a tough time and just did not feel like I had "it" and had to slow after 1 mile or so. However someone in a red tri suit came up on me from behind at the sharp hill around mile 4 and I did all I could to keep him off just because I needed some added incentive to hammer the pace. That guy helped me out. It was cool. in the end, i salvaged a respectible time for myself.
What would you do differently?:

bring more horsepower!
Transition 2

Run
  • 28m 4s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Despite a rough race up to this point, I still had a solid time (12th overall after swim+bike) however I knew it was over. I almost did not start the run but that is out and out quitting which is NG. I did have to walk it a lot thou ("run" was 5 min slower than last week). I don't know why I was off this race.
What would you do differently?:

I think it was prob the heat/humidity. In week 5 (the last race with no rain), 29 people finished below 58 min. this week, which was 10-15 degrees hotter and more humid, only 16 finished below 58 min. Not enough data to prove anything... but maybe theres something to it?
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think heat/hum. Everyone had to contend with it, I think I did not do well handling it. But not really sure.

Event comments:

There is always next week with Winding Trails so even an off race is not too bad. And even an off race is still a blast, isn't it!

Course: off road, flat, non-technical, but millions of roots and pine forests (pine needle beds are just slightly firmer than sand...feels like). I ride a totally sweet 29er which helps esp w roots (its so nice, its practically cheating). A full suspension prob handles them better but never tried so can't really say.
