Pre-race routine:

Wake up call at 4:30...bagel w peant butter and jelly, bamana, 19 oz gatorade, and some water. Had breakfat at 5:00am but wave did not go off until 8:15am. Continued to sip on Gatorade from 6:00am to 7:30, maybe consumed 10 or so more ounces, also had one more gel at 7:00am.
Event warmup:

Swam around the start line...probably 200 or so yrds....wanted to feel the difference between down current and into the current.
Swim
  • 33m 41s
  • 2310 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swam fine. I am fairly comfortable in the water so this is a nice comforter for me as this was my first 70.3. I started toward the outside as I had no interet in jostling for the straightest route next to the buoy. I also felt it was a disadvantage to set myself up in the mix of the crowd. The one weird thing that I experienced was I started swimming while the water was still shallow enough to run....I could have ran 25 or so more yrds but i started stroking so I felt it was to late (and weird) to change.
What would you do differently?:

pace myself a bit better. I had a plan to start out strong and then settle in to avoid the crowds...this was effective but i did get tired after about 20 min or so. The most difficult part of the swim was the beach run when we landed....I am sure my hr spiked higher than I would have liked. Also, need to time sighting bettter....if u were to sight after the roller u would not be able to see...need to sight right before waves come; practice, practice, practice
Transition 1
  • 03m 15s
Comments:

As this was my first 70.3 I didn't press the transition much. I was winded from the beach run and the long run to bike, I worked the wetsuit off, put on the helmet and left...worked hard but wasn't overly concerned w time.
What would you do differently?:

eventually put shoes in pedals and become more efficient. Was not concerned w this yet, next race I will be.

Comments:

First 5 miles outta the bike I felt ok, nothing great but nothing terrible. After 5, I got into a grove and I started feeling strong. It worked out that the top pros were passing along this time and that was a blast to see. They were coming into the wind and u can see how hard they were working- loved it, best seat in the house to see some of the top Tri pros. First 35 miles were wind aided and I felt GREAT....averaged 24mph and felt strong. As bike is my weakest leg, I just thought that this was my day. At mile 35 turned into 19mph wind teeth and it was humbling, kep 90 cadence but averaged 16mph for most of it. This part of the bike leg toasted my legs as I was working as hard as I could and not going anywhere fast. At mile 48, old knee injury showed itself on left knee and I went 75% right knee strength to finish up bike leg. This was demoralizing but I was confident injury would chill out for run. Bike leg was very hard for me...enough that I was not looking forward to the run.
What would you do differently?:

Need to be a stronger cyclist to move up in time. I'm realizing that the bike is key....most time is spent in the saddle and it sets u up for the run....I will get stronger in this event....the bike trainer and I are gonna be busy this off season, hopefully join a group and train w power as well....power would have regulated the wind for me too.
Transition 2

Comments:

i was toasted from the bike. Relaxed, changed shoes, hit the head and i was off....the day was no longer fun for me.
What would you do differently?:

not sure...I worked as hard as I could have worked. I wish my knee felt a bit better but that didn't come into play until the end of the bike and I was better on the run. Train more I guess....I trained as hard as I could have w the time available...get some more races under the belt .
Run
  • 2h 04m 57s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

haha, I covered most of this during my course description...I did enjoy the entire course throughout the run. Very well run, great volunteers- truly a great day.
What would you do differently?:

not sure yet- spend some more time on the bike trainer....push for longer bike rides...I did 2 56 mile bricks w 10k run for training, next time I want to do more 75 plus mile bike rides...swim went will
Post race
Warm down:

it started raining and got cold quick...we had 4 children under 5 at the finish so we had to get outta there quick....had 2 slices of yummy, salty Pizza Hut pizza and then walked back to the hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really... a little knee pain and lack of confidence that I can worse through how i was feeling during the race. I def need to be more confident that just cause i feel a bad during a section of the race it doesn't mean that we cant change that....experince would have helped there.

Event comments:

Absolutely enjoyed the race...organizer did a great job.

Volunteers were amazing!

Course: Plan was to run 9:00 min mile for first 6 and then see how I felt. First 9 was ok and the I was miserable...kinda felt like quitting (which I wasnt gonna do) but my mind was somewhat convincing at the time. Slowed down and went w the day. I tried to break the race into 4 sets of 3 miles. After mile 2 i was hurting, switched to banana halves between 2 and6 and then helped a bunch...actually worked through my misery. After mile 5 my mind almost won and convinced me it was ok to walk, thankfully something in my body over ruled that. i took it mile by mile and fought through the pain...there was a steep hill at mile 6 and 11 that I decided to walk and all elsed I "shuffled" through. Actually felt great in the last mile and half....some grat friends surprised me at the finish line, along w my 2 boys, wife and father and mother in law...truly life affecting experince training for my first Half Ironman....my 3yr old feels comfortable and excited to go to "Daddy's race" which keeps the fire burning. I think more 70.3's are ahead, and a full goes on the schedule when the is open enough to allow the full commitment that a 140.6 deserves. Great experince, and I am thrilled w the result....although did not feel that way during the run :)
