![]() Swim
Comments: The entrance and exit was pretty rocky with limbs, but they laid some fabric down at the exit of the water. Overall, I guess I swam pretty good. I was watching the guy next to me, and we both started going off to the left a little at the beginning of the swim, but I quickly got back on track. I bumped into a few people every now and then. I swam freestyle with some breast stroke mixed in. What would you do differently?: Work on my sighting more and try to swim freestyle more. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: I ran straight to my bike, put my helmet on, wiped my feet off a little before remembering I was going to have to run through the grass again, and unracked my bike. I ran to the pavement with my shoes already clipped on the bike, straddled it, put my feet on top of my shoes, and took off. I got up to speed and slipped my feet in my shoes and fastened them. What would you do differently?: I wouldn't wipe my feet off. I need to practice stepping on the left shoe and throwing my right leg over instead of straddling the bike. ![]() Bike
Comments: The ride wasn't bad, but there were a couple of hills that I had to work extra hard to get up without dropping my speed way down. There were a couple of stretches of downhills that were fun. I passed a couple of people, but I also got passed by several people. I drank water throughout the ride. One bottle was more than enough. What would you do differently?: I need to train more on hills, so I can get up them faster without losing speed. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: The transition area is at the entrance of the park which is right after a curve. Therefore, it kind of sneaks up on you. I unstrapped my shoes early because of this, but I almost waited too long to get my feet out and on the top of my shoes. I was able to swing my right leg over the bike and ride the last little bit with my left foot on top of that shoe. I slowed down so I could jump off my bike while it was still moving, but I jumped off a little too early, so I had to run a little further with my bike. I racked my bike, stepped on my transition towel, put on my socks and shoes, grabbed my race belt, and ran off. Luckily, my sister-in-law yelled at me to take my helmet off. I completely forgot about it. What would you do differently?: I need to decide before the race when I'm going to take my feet out of my shoes. I need to wait a little longer before jumping off the bike. I also need to take my helmet off before putting my running shoes on so I don't forget to take it off. ![]() Run
Comments: The beginning of the run was extra hard since my legs felt like jello and lead coming off the bike and I had to immediately run up hills. I was able to run the entire thing without having to walk. It seemed like forever before getting to the road after running all those hilly trails. Once I got to the road, I was able to speed up some. The run around the lake wasn't bad, and I sped up even more once I got to the 2 mile sign. The last rocky hill was a surprise to me, and it was hard to run up it, but afterwards, I sped back up and even more so going across the bridge to the finish line. What would you do differently?: If the run is going to be on trails, then I need to train more on trails. I guess I could to try and push myself a little more also, especially going up the hills. ![]() Post race
Warm down: I forgot to warm-down really. I was so excited and still had energy that all I wanted to do was tell my mom, Tammy, and Todd about the race and watch for Daniel to finish so we could celebrate our success. I was really happy that I was able to meet all four of my goals. 1-I finished, 2-I didn't have to walk, 3-I still had energy and wasn't dead afterwards, and 4-I finished in under 1 hour and 30 minutes. What limited your ability to perform faster: I need to train more in open water, on trails, on hills, and do more speed work. Also, I need to strengthen my core more. Event comments: Overall, this was a good race, but the run was tough. I also heard that they messed up during the awards ceremony because they figured the times wrong. This was our first triathlon. My husband and I woke up at 5:00am so we would have plenty of time without having to rush. We finished putting everything in the truck. Then, we ate a bowl of oatmeal with a small glass of milk. We changed clothes and left for the race. We got there about 6:30am. We got our numbers wrote on us (which was cool) and picked up our chips. Then, we started setting up our transition areas. It ended up getting packed. Someone stole some of the bike racks, so they had to make new ones the night before. Therefore, I think they didn't quite have enough, but everyone worked together to fit everyone in. During one of our trips back to the truck, we ate a banana and drank some gaterade. My mom, Daniel's sister, and her husband came to watch us and take pictures, so we hooked up with them once they got there. We showed them our transition areas and headed off toward the lake.
I jogged in place and stretched some. I probably should have warmed-up a little more, but I was excited about my first tri and was watching everyone else.
