Swim
Comments: not sure why I was so slow. Started out at least sighting well and not going too off course for the first leg....by the last leg got to hear EVERY kayaker yell 'go right go right'.....I just figure I need to give them something to do.... I did find that when I tried to breathe bilaterally I was dizzy....and something seems to happen to me in OWS vs the pool and I turn into this struggling baby turtle....even though I kept telling myself I am a swimmer....my body said - 'yeah right'. What would you do differently?: I guess I need to work on OWS a heck of a lot more since this was my slowest one yet!!!! and it is the one sport I HAVE been training since my knee injury.... Transition 1
Comments: bark on bare feet does not feel good Bike
Comments: So I REALLY took it easy. Held back and kept watts low. My knee started hurting at around mile 30. So my inner dialog kept going: 'I should stop. Should I stop? I don't want to, will just take it easy.' repeat. Then the wind hit HARD so the idea of stopping make me think I was copping out....and then I was at mile 50 so duh I had to finish. If my knee had been ok I do think I would have PRd.... What would you do differently?: not have a knee injury so I can go hammer. Transition 2
Comments: some idiot racked their bike in my spot. So I spent the whole time trying to move theirs so I could get mine in. Self centered JERK. I am not used to this, as even when I swim as slowly as I do I am usually one of the first bikes back so I don't have to deal..... Run
Comments: So knee was hurting but not too awful. Started out easy, did not feel fantastic but was ok. Then got to the "grassland" which was rather uneven, and had to dodge folks - my knee was not happy. Even when I stopped to walk at aid stations etc. I started the second loop, realized I could TOTALLY finish this race, and would probably be in the 6:30 range, nothing stellar but for injured and untrained not bad. But I started to think at what cost. My knee, my satorius muscle insertion were really unhappy and I have a whole season ahead. So made the decision to pull out and turn my chip in. What would you do differently?: nothing. Post race
Warm down: turned in my chip, they still gave me a medal though I said I DNFd - but I did do most of the race....walked (limped) around, found the med tent and iced. Helped the med tent volunteers from my position with triage - ie the guy on the ground with his feet up on chair really belongs in the main tent with an IV.... volunteers were plentiful and AMAZING. What limited your ability to perform faster: injury, lack of training. So the really cool things that came out of this: this is season 3 for me, and essentially on base training I can do a HIM - how cool is that? No speed records but I can do it! and I NAILED nutrition. So Timberman should be a better race.... Event comments: I really did not like the run. Now I am not sure how I would have felt if my knee were uninjured, but reading everyone else's evaluations makes me think I still would not have liked it. Not sure if I will do this race again. If I do I will fly into Tampa not Orlando and try to rent a villa or stay outside disney. If I don't have my kids with me other people's kids are so not cute..... Last updated: 2009-08-05 12:00 AM

I went into this race very calm, no expectations as I tore my MCL (medial collateral ligament) 2 months ago - so have basically been tapering since (ha ha). Lots of pulls sets swimming, but no runs over 5 miles and just easy trainer rides. So knowing I would likely DNF, decided to give it a go anyway. Went down to Orlando Thursday, so that I could try to acclimatize, and stayed at the Wilderness Lodge to be near transition.
I bought an aero helmet at the very wimpy expo....a lazer - it fit well....so now I have a martian head. Mostly I did it because my helmet was nowhere to be found at home, and I brought my back up which is heavy and hot...so the aero helmet is lighter...
Friday had dinner/hung out with Erin and Suzanne - more great BTers...Saturday went to bed while it was still light out....so woke up spontaneously at 3:30 - before my alarm at 4:30....The hotel had opened the cafe at 3 for us, so went down with my mickey mug and got coffee. Dressed, met up with others and walked to transition.
Walked to transition, got marked, set up and went to water. We were not allowed in ahead of time, so warm up was running to porta potties (coffee finally hit 10 minutes before my wave) and swinging my arms.
