Pre-race routine:

The Mrs had this on the the dance card and considering I hadnt run a tri this season, figured would take another stab at my first race I ever did. This course is a tough little sprint with a hilly longer for a sprint bike and a trail run that opens up into a subdivision and finishes with a hill. Great venue, two transitions which is unique, and spectator friendly. Once kid care was set, signed up before the deadline on Thursday. I also couldnt make up my mind to get my long run in for MOO before or after the event and opted for the Thursday prior. Recovery felt pretty decent but it was less than an optimal race week. The wife and I packed up the car and headed got to the race 615. Very nice with a 8am start. It was 76 and muggy upon waking up and packing the car and the forecast was for more heat.
Event warmup:

Checked both transitions to remember where my stuff was and then since I decided to try sans wetsuit, would test the tri top. Unfortunately that has side pockets and the drag was noticeable. I brought an underarmour top to go over that and that didnt work so hot, but better than just the tritop, so slipped that on over. Didnt even pack the wetsuit, so the experiment would still be underway. Swam a little bit to see how things were, check newer goggles, etc. Lots of Donks in attendance to chat with too.

Comments:

v 1426 in 06. This is confusing to me cuz I felt pretty good on the swim. Drafted a bit, had to fight for position at times, etc. About a minute better than 06 but I should have a lot better swim than this. Hmmm.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I need to wear a wetsuit, or at least not wear two tops that are causing drag? Stroke felt good, sighting on and was kinda bummed to see this time. Oh well.
Transition 1
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

vs 151 in 06. The gamble was a slower possible swim vs a better T2 time. 40 seconds better than 06, so maybe the experiment was a wash and I could have done about a minute faster in the suit maybe?
What would you do differently?:

To wetsuit or not to wetsuit...that is the question. Need a better top though if I dont.

Comments:

My plan was to hammer this bike. It is a hilly course with some good climbs and rollers. My pie in the sky hope was for a 23mph avg which has little reasoning behind it, so not too disappointed I didnt hit it. Lara and Clint were at the mount line just before me, so it was funny having three donks on the service road or whatever on the path out of the park. Got locked in and to it pretty quick. The Mrs had the garmin so I was doing the race with just a stopwatch for the race time. They had a lot of mile markers on the bike so could work on some splits. Winds were swirling and primarily from the south east it seemed. Pushed it hard, had some high and low points. I havent done a ton of tempo stuff this summer but this felt ok. Ran out of water with about 6 miles to go so was just on infinit. Probably coulda used some more agua!
What would you do differently?:

More tempo bike work vs the focus on longer stuff rebuilding after a long time off the bike mary training for Beantown. Some race wheels would have been nice too as I was rolling the trainers.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

v 58 in 06. Got the bike racked and helmet off after the downhill run in the grass. Tried to get the left shoe on and the calf cramped a bit. The Idatens are like socks and between the light shoe and cramp, it took forever to get the first shoe on in relative terms. Got the second on and got moving conservatively. Not a good t2 and considering I missed 2nd AG by 2 seconds, every little bit counts.
What would you do differently?:

Not suck?

Comments:

v 2024 in 06. Hot as ballz! I knew the trail was a bit of an up and down, so a bit conservative. Got out of the camp and into the baking flat sub division. Kept cadence strong and felt decent tempo wise but the hurt was there. Poured a few cups of water down the back which helped. I had a one bottle fuel belt but hardly used it vs what was provided on the run course. Fun to see cweninger and scoobysdad. Held solid til the end but not my strongest run. Still a PR on this course in hot conditions not very conducive to my sweatiness.
What would you do differently?:

With IM training the bigger fish, tempo work on Tuesday and a 24 miler on Thursday didnt really help with fresh legs. Still, felt decent PRing this run course under these conditions and will be back to sub 20 this one. It drives me nuts but is no pushover fo sho.
Post race
Warm down:

Headed back on the course to hang with Force and Clint and cheer on the other donks. Lara finished up strong, had some post food grub and found out I got 3rd AG, missing 2nd by 2 seconds as mentioned before. Oh yeah, and 4th place was 2 seconds behind me. Yikes! The do random waves so makes it interesting as far as seeing final results. After AG awards, they announced that the final finisher was 10 mins out. She was an 86 year old plugging away out there and everyone was going nuts for her. Awesomeness!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Long course training focus, especially with some tougher stuff the week of. Oh yeah, and that abyssmal swim. and the wind, and heat, and pig wheels and waaaahh wah wahhhhhhh!!! :)

Event comments:

Nice venue, smaller race feel and there are usually some fasties that do this traditionally. Recommend checking it out if you want a more challenging sprint course and the proceeds go the the Boys and Girls Club. Good times!

Course: Starts out on trails around the camp, a few hills on the trail. Dirt and hills make it cautious going for about 2/3 mile, then opens up into a nicely black asphalted subdivision, great for hot days! Back into camp with a downhill and then a decent uphill before the downward finish.
