Swim
Comments: This includes about a 100 yard run from the beach to T1. This is a really good swim for me. My best ever in a sprint. What would you do differently?: Go out a little faster. Transition 1
Comments: Good T1. A little hard to mount and get going because it was crowded. What would you do differently?: Move faster Bike
Comments: Was looking forward to this ride because it's pretty challenging for a sprint. The first couple of miles is mostly easy climbing, but I was slower than I wanted because it was a little crowded. Then came the long downhill where I hit 43 MPH which is the fastest I've ever gone, even though I wasn't in aero because it was still a little crowded and I'm a chicken. Then there was the long climb where I did well and passed probably 20 people, so I was feeling good. The last 5 miles is rollers but mostly downhill, so I was cruising along nicely in aero around 35 MPH, and then: pop and pssssst, my back tire flatted. Son of a gun! 1800 miles this year with 3 flats, and 2 of them are in races! WTH, man? Oh well, changed the flat which took about 6 or 7 minutes. Actual moving time according to my Garmin was 54:48. Saw "todant" near the beginning, so I tried to say a little something to cheer her on. What would you do differently?: Not get a flat. I could have pushed myself a little harder on the big climb because I never felt even close to puking, and I still felt pretty strong when I got to the top. Transition 2
Comments: Too slow. What would you do differently?: Move faster and with a sense of urgency. Run
Comments: Was feeling a little angry, which may have helped me run a little faster. Garmin says 2.8 miles which is probably more accurate because I don't think I run this fast. What would you do differently?: Run a little harder in the first mile: too much left in the tank at the end. Post race
Warm down: "todant" passed by on the bike as I was nearing the finish, so I ran over to the run out, and luckily caught her as she was heading out on the run, so I was able to cheer for her a little. Great to see a brand new triathlete!! What limited your ability to perform faster: I'm slow and don't train enough. I try to push myself, but always come up a little short of my best possible effort. Flat tire. Event comments: NY Tri races are not fancy, but they are always well run, and have very good traffic control. They have 2 races here a year, and I really have to try to do at least one race because the challenging bike course and the pretty scenery make it a really good race. Race was close to home and didn't start until 8, so I didn't have to leave my house until 6. Niiiiiiice! Said hello to new BT'er "todant" who was doing her very first tri. Very glad I got to meet her and her friend who was also doing her first race and wish them luck before the race.
About a 1/4 mile easy jog. Decided to wear the wetsuit even though the water was pretty warm and it was already getting warm out. So putting it on and standing on the beach in it heated me up quite a bit.
