Swim
Comments: Since the swim looked to be a bit long, I didn't go all out, but kept a moderate pace. The first 200 yards was a straight shot to the first buoy. When I rounded the buoy, I did stop for just a second to get on course for the next buoy. After that it was smooth sailing. I was able to draft a little going to the 2nd and 3rd buoy. I did get kicked in the face once, but wasn't too bad. Goggles stayed on fine. There were some tall weeds in the middle of the swim that were a little annoying. They had treated the lake for weeds beforehand, but I think they stayed close to the shore, because there weren't any weeds near the shore, but there were weeds out in the middle. What would you do differently?: Maybe...maybe go just a bit harder on the swim. I was very fresh coming out of the water, so I feel I could have gone a little bit faster. Transition 1
Comments: First time I had shoes clipped on bike before hand. Went very well. I had practiced this before, but had not done it in a race yet, due to other races' conditions (rocky terrain or dirt). Definately save about 10-20 seconds having shoes pre-clipped in. What would you do differently?: Maybe move a little faster but it was tough because there was a narrow space running out of transition to the mount line, so you really couldn't pass anyone. Bike
Comments: Age group rank says 16th, but the 1st and 2nd place bike finishers' times tell me they only did 1 lap instead of the 2 laps required. Anyway, very good bike for me. I did however drop my water bottle once, which I went back to get which cost me probably about :45 to a minute to get the bottle and get back up to speed. Probably should have just left the bottle and gotten it later. Hindsight 20/20. What would you do differently?: Not go back and get the water bottle. Transition 2
Comments: I need to get used to running sockless. This would shave probably about 10 seconds off my T2. I did also rack my bike in the wrong place at first, so that cost me another 5-10 seconds. I also put my visor and race belt on before I took off, because I wanted to have my watch with me on the run, so I needed to get that on while I was running out of T2. What would you do differently?: I need to get used to running sockless and get a waterproof watch to wear during the whole race instead of trying to put one on in T2. I could easily shave 20-30 seconds off my T2 by doing these. Run
Comments: I thought I had a good pace going when I got to what I thought was mile marker 1 at 7:23 and mile marker 2 at around 15:15. I either really slowed down or my mile markers were off. I probably would have at least attempted to speed up if I knew my pace was not where I thought it was. Anyways, it was a decent run for me. I ran the last 1/2 - 1/3 mile very strong. I was trying to catch a guy in my AG that had just passed me at mle marker 3 or so. Couldn't do it, but no one passed me that last 1/3 of a mile. What would you do differently?: Maybe ignore the watch and just run as fast as I can. I think I could have gone a little bit faster, but I thought I was keeping about a 7:10 pace, which was better than my goal pace of 7:45, so I didn't push it anymore that is until the last 1/3 of mile when I was trying to catch my fellow age grouper. Post race
Warm down: Drand some gatorade and water and ate few grapes. Stretched a little and waited for the results to be posted. When I realized my and my wife's place (she was 6th in her AG) we caught the shuttle bus back to transition to get our stuff and head out. What limited your ability to perform faster: Careless on the bike with dropping my water bottle and then not thinking I could just get it later. I need to get fatser at transitions. Probably the easiest thing I could do to shave about 30 seconds off of my race time. Event comments: The one complaint I would have is the weeds on the swim and the lack of water at the finish line. You had to walk about 50 feet or so weaving through a crowd of people to get water at the finish line. They need to have water in your hands immediately after crossing the finish line. You shouldn't have to get directions on where the water is and then have to weave through a crowd of people to get to it. It took me a good 5 minutes to get to the water. Overall, this was a good race and I will definately do it again next year. Last updated: 2009-08-12 12:00 AM

Ate powerbar and drank some water. Not my usual, but didn't seem to make a difference.
Streteched and swam about 100 yards or so.
