Pre-race routine:

woke up at 7:30 with my friend's call. She told me that she wouldn't participate because of injury and the heat. I battled with my brains wondering if i was going to go because i suffered what i think was a heat stroke last year. It was different last year :the event was changed to a duathlon because of bad water conditions. So i decided to go and give it a try and left home at 9:30.
Prep was mostly: drink, drink and drink because my start was at 12:30
Event warmup:

a few strokes in the river, i was nervous and had a bit of nausea. The event was scarce with ordinary gals like me, tri machines were the main bulk of the crowd...very hard on the self esteem
Swim
  • 18m
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 24s / 100 meters
Comments:

mass start was waching machine style with girls that were not navigating very well .Had to breastroke to dodge them. my breathing was bad and i didn't get into a good beat till the last stretch.Considering that i just freestyled about 40% of the course i am satisfied with the time i've done.
What would you do differently?:

move far right for the first 100m
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

i got confused and lost a lot of time because i lost a shoe and had to clip it back, then went the wrong way for the bike exit! I also lost time trying to fit my ponytail out of the helmet wich caused problems during the bike section.
What would you do differently?:

pay attention to the signs and prep earlier to memorise the course.
Bike
  • 50m 16s
  • 20 kms
  • 23.87 km/hr
Comments:

helmet was hurting, squeezing my head in a thight grip. I tried to loosen it but to no avail. I was dizzy at the end. For the first time, i was calling it quits. I signaled to my hubby at the end of the bike that i was done. I was scared all of this was caused by the heat and i didn't want to visit the medic tent.

What would you do differently?:

yank the ponytail!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

as i was walking to the bike rack i saw that i wasn't alone. i felt way better when i took my helmet of and saw my time so far even if i walked my time would not be as bad as my worst tri in 2007...so i kept going.
Run
  • 40m 1s
  • 5 kms
  • 08m  min/km
Comments:

a walk/run combo
What would you do differently?:

drink gatorade at the 1.5 mark
Post race
Warm down:

a nice volonteer had a hose so i had a wonderfull shower (minus the soap)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat and lack of training in the heat. i also was not at my ideal weight...got to get my nutrition sorted out. This and running needs a lot of work (and the most will power)

Event comments:

for the first time in 4 years of racing i was about to call it quits.i am still not sure if i will race in sept or end my season right now. I need to re-assess what i will do. Motivation was not there this year. Tri club lacked coaching and this affected me more than i tought. I need to find a coach or join another club next year.Or maybe i just need to do something else. It was fun to meet Robert and to see a friend do his first tri.
