Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6 am. Ate a whole wheat bagel, a banana, and a protein bar. I drank a glass of water and a glass of Powerade. I went over my equipment checklist one more time and packed everything into my car, and I was off. I arrived at the parking area at 8:15 am.
Event warmup:

You have to ride your bike about 3 miles from the parking to the starting area, it's a downhill don't worry. So that was the first part of my warm-up. I got my stuff set up at the transition area (only one in this race) and went for a light 1/5 mile jog. Then I got my wetsuit on and got in the water about 10 minutes before my wave started and did about 20 yards of warm-up swimming.
Swim
  • 16m 42s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was my first OWS (open water swim) it didn't phase me. The only thing that was weird for me was the full body wetsuit. It felt like I had resistance bands on my shoulders. With every stroke my shoulders burned. The buoyancy factor of the wetsuit definitely out-weighed the shoulder burn.
What would you do differently?:

I now know that I drift to the right as I swim in open water, so I need to navigate better. I will use a sleeveless wetsuit next time.
Transition 1
  • 04m 53s
Comments:

My first transition ever. I had issues getting the wetsuit off, the zipper was kinda tricky. I had an issue getting my tank top on. I ate several gummy nutrition things.
What would you do differently?:

Wetsuit practice, dry off upper torso more.
Bike
  • 53m 58s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 15.01 mile/hr
Comments:

I didn't train hard enough for the hills/false flat portions of the course. I didn't train hard enough period. BUT I wanted to do the bike in under an hour and I did. I ate some gummy nutrition things.
What would you do differently?:

Train HARDER!!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Nothing too interesting here. Took a minute to collect my wits and get a drink and get psyched up for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Not stop to drink, especially when there is an aid station a half mile away.
Run
  • 34m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't train hard enough for this course. The hills and off road portion killed me. My quads cramped up for the entire last mile. I couldn't feel my legs as I crossed the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Train appropriately for the course I'm doing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked over to my family, thanked them for coming. Tried to get the feeling back in my lower extremities. Got a massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training for the course at hand.

Event comments:

Overall this was a great thing for me. My estimates on each sport were almost right on. I thought I would do 15 minute swim, I did just over 16. I thought I would do the bike in 1 hour, I did it in 54 minutes. I thought I would do the run in 30 minutes, I did it in 34 minutes, damn cramped quads...

Thanks TriUtah for a great race!!!

Course: Longest bike ride I've done. The first half is false flat, about a 2-5% grade. There is long climb after that, you think it's over but it just keeps going, not super steep, but long. Then it is a good 3-4 mile flat/false flat part, followed by the steep downhill. I think I hit about 45 mph on that hill, awesome. Then a flat ride into the transition.
