Swim
Comments: Swim went okay. Had been faster in training. Ran into some traffic about half way through since I was in the second wave. Group of about 15 women who I had a tough time getting through since they were tightly bunched. A little bit of a chop on the way out and the short segment to the landing. Felt like I should have been a couple of minutes faster. What would you do differently?: Pick a better line through the slower swimmers from the wave ahead of me. Swim in the wetsuit a little more often to get used to the feel. Transition 1
Comments: Typical T1, fastest in clydes and faster than most in the race. They must have cut the grass right before they set-up transition. Had to take 15 seconds to try and wipe most of the grass from my feet since they were covered. What would you do differently?: Not get grass all over my feet. Bike
Comments: Tried to keep my heart rate down, but didn't want to go too slow. Felt good for the most part. Started feeling bad after taking in too much hydration at start and then ended up going overboard and not taking in enough the last half. Need to work on that. Tried to push it past mile 40 and was doing a good job until I dropped my chain at the botom of a big hill. Lost a minute stopping and getting it back on, plus the momentum I lost so I had to grind up the hill. What would you do differently?: Need different gearing on the rear if I do this race again so that I can stay in big ring the whole time. The hills aren't so big that you couldn't get away with just changing the rear gears and never have to shift the front. Transition 2
Comments: Fastest in clydes and one of the faster T2's in the race. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: This run was brutal. Couldn't get my legs to turn over fast enough. Mainly due to lack of run training the last 2 months and for the entire year for that matter. Held 10 min pace through mile 8. Just like last year, there were two big hills between miles 8 and 9 that finished me off. Managed to only walk twice before mile 10 (besides the aid stations), but after that it turned into the death march. Would run a couple minutes and then walk for a minute, rinse, repeat. Ran in the final 0.5 mile on will alone. What would you do differently?: More run training, hill training and lose some more weight. Post race
Warm down: Got some water and headed to the lake. Waded in and cooled off the legs and body. Should have sat in it for about 15 minutes and probably would have felt much better the rest of the day. Got some pizza. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of run training. Should have easily been able to go sub-6 with a decent run. Came off the bike exactly where I thought I would be, between 3:40 and 3:45. That gave me 2:15 to get the run in, just couldn't get it done once again, just like New Orleans earlier this year. Running this year has been horrible with only about 450 miles total for the year. Just won't cut it. Event comments: I like this race even after a second time. Bike course is nice and scenic. Swim is always good and run is nice if it were so hilly...Low key race with a small crowd. Suits me better than 2500 people. Resort is nice if you want to bring the family to hang out. Got up at 5:00, ate a bowl of oatmeal and started sipping on weakened gatorade. Wife and I loaded up the truck and headed to the race site for around 6. Got set-up, body-marked and down to the beach about 5 minutes before start.
Took a short 200 m swim to get warmed up just before the first wave hit the water.
