Swim
Comments: I tried starting in the same area as when I did this course in May. I think there were fewer newbies this time around, because I got slapped around and kicked a lot at first. Naturally, this freaked me out a bit and I ended up reverting to my crutch - the sidestroke - for almost the entire course. I wanted to switch back to freestyle, but was out of breath! I did pass quite a few people who started out too fast and then ran out of gas. What would you do differently?: Start farther back with the slower folks. FREESTYLE! I've finally gotten the hang of the stroke and breathing, now I just need to remain calm and use it. Transition 1
Comments: Okay, but still think this could be better. What would you do differently?: I need to learn to ride and drink. I stopped to Gu and drink from my bottle because I suck at doing this when I am riding. Bike
Comments: I think the bike is my stronger sport, but I think I have room to improve. My bike computer was not working, so I had no idea how fast I was going. I just looked for someone who seemed to be going pretty fast and tried to keep up. I originally saw the results and thought my pace said 16.3 mph - I was totally bummed at that because I don't think I could have gone much faster. Turns out, I read it wrong! What would you do differently?: Train harder on the bike - it's the one thing I can't seem to find enough time to squeeze in regularly. Train with hills - the small hills on the course killed me! Ask for clipless pedals and shoes from Santa. :-) Transition 2
Comments: Easy for me since I don't clip in or have to change shoes. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: I am not a fast runner. I know that, but I am working on it. I followed my plan and only walked through the 2 water stations...until the end. It started feeling hotter and I took a quick break. Luckily, a lady came by and said come on, I'm not running fast, run with me. I did and she lied - she was running faster than me. LOL! I was shooting for a 10:15 pace and didn't quite make it. What would you do differently?: Keep working on getting faster. Post race
Warm down: Found the family and walked a little to stretch the legs out. Nice icy towels and cold water were handed out, which made me feel much, much better. Event comments: I love TriGirl - very organized, great volunteers, etc. Overall, I was pleased with my performance. At the end of my last tri, I felt spent and thought to myself "need to train harder." This time, I felt like I had trained just enough. It was awesome to have the whole family there for the 1st time and my sweet hubby even had a medal made for me! (I was whining that you don't get a finisher's medal in triathlons like you do in marathons and 1/2s, but you train harder. And, It is doubtful I will ever place in my AG!) Woke up too early, missed my exit, but still managed to make it to the race with plenty of time to spare. I had a 1/2 PB&J about 30 minutes prior to the race. I ran into fellow BTers and a couple of other friends, so that was awesome!
For the 1st time, I actually got in the water and swam about 150 yds. Water felt great and it helped calm my butterflies a bit. It was great to see the hubby and kids right as I was getting out of the water.
