Pre-race routine:

This was to be my first race after the Lakefront Mary. I have been having a hard time motivating myself to be competitive at this point in the season. Also still feeling a little down after not putting out the performance I could have at the Marathon. Spent most of the week before this race trying to decide if I was really going to run it. I knew I needed to "move on" though..

A wise donkey gave me an idea.. instead of going into the race with the intention of racing to win or close to it I decided to find a fellow donkey to race with. Jmwebs (Jim) became that Donkey. He wanted to go for a PR of beating a 1:21 and try for a 1:17. He was nice enough to let me pace him. Little did he know what he was getting himself into. 9.3 miles of me talking and talking and talking.. :)

I had convinced my husband into taking me to the race. His boss's wife was running so he had someone to hang out with during the run. We parked on Lincoln Memorial Drive and walked to the race start INTO the wind that I would later be runing INTO again. But who was complaining? Not me - my S.O. was. Good thing he had decided not to run the 5K!

Saw many donkeys and many others that I knew. Stayed inside where it was super warm and realized I was super thirsty because I had not been drinking much. Of course got the "when are you going to learn???" from my husband when I told him I was thirsty. So ran off to get some water and then pretty much time for the start.

Found Jim and everyone else
Event warmup:

Jumping up and down to get warm - and standing by cweinger and tall-tri-dad who blocked the wind for us.

Comments:

Started off way too far back. Actually I have no idea where the start line was. Ran with morey1 (Dan) in the start with the "Royal Flush" (Clint) behind - making all sorts of comments that had me cracking up. I don't think I have ever laughed at the start of a race! We soon lost Mr. Flush and that first mile was a 9 min mile due to the crowds. But it was all good.

Dan broke away as we headed up the hill and Jim and I started to cruise as we got away from the masses. Goal was to beat a 1:21 and get close to a 1:17 and we were on pace as we hit the last 5K and the wind. My strategy was to have us so that we stayed comfortable and then in the last mile or so started to pick up pace. There was no way I was going to let the wind get in our way. I just kept talking and talking - figured it would distract us from the wind. :)

We kept it going and when we hit the beer table (sorry no stopping) knew it was almost over. Time to kick it into gear and I sped up - Jim sped up - so I sped up some more - came around the last turn and we sprinted!

Clock said 1:17:03 so I have no idea how we got a 1:17:12. Since we started farther back I am sure we broke 1:17

Regardles it was a PR for Jim - Mission accomplished
What would you do differently?:

Not start so far back and know where the start line was. :)

Post race
Warm down:

Walked back a little to where Dan was standing and watch some others come in - saw Pete come across and Clint with a plunger full of beer. Spent a lot of time laughing. Headed to the Ale House - by then I was getting really cold. Stood in line for about 1 minute then said screw it and headed home.

Apparently all the 5Kers and fast 15Kers filled it up to capacity so I am glad we didn't wait.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing

Event comments:

Would have been good post - race if we could have gotten in the ale house. Could have used a few more water stops. Although I did learn from running with Jim the value of actually slowing down at the water station. Spilled a lot less and felt more hydrated. Might try that at Tyrannea

I really had a great time. Thanks Jim for letting me run with you. For me the run was very comfortable and helping someone else get their PR was very rewarding. I needed this run to get myself back on track motivation wise.

Now onto Beer Run #2 - Tyrannea
