Swim
Comments: Felt my feet and calves cramping up early in the swim, but I just kept breathing through it; however, at the final turn for sure, my right calf completely seized up and I actually screamed out loud. If I didn't have a wet suit on, I think I might have sunk to the bottom of Georgian Bay. My calf is still a mess. I managed to get through it and kept going, but could not find the buoy to save my soul. I saw another swimmer and hoped that they were heading in the right direction. We eventually got to shore. I'm not a very fast swimmer, but I can swim forever, so aside from the leg cramp, it was actually kind of relaxing and fun. What would you do differently?: More OWS over the long distance. Take Endurolytes!! Transition 1
Comments: Pulled my goggles and cap into suit, which worked well. Then, hilariously, I started to put on my bike shoes and realized that I still had my wetsuit on! Arggh. Shoes off, wetsuit off, shoes on - no socks...good idea. What would you do differently?: Ummm...take off my wetsuit before I put my bike shoes on...? Bike
Comments: Hoped to catch some of my AG, but didn't see anyone. Those 40+ gals are fast!! Passed a bunch of guys, who eventually all passed me on the run, and passed some younger and older women. Had a good ride, the packed pebble road was irritating, though. What would you do differently?: Not much. I'd like to break 30k some day (average). Need to have bike refitted into more of an aero position, I think. Transition 2
Comments: Grabbed a gel, put on my socks and shoes, grabbed a hat and left. Pretty happy with this one. What would you do differently?: Nothing much. Run
Comments: Ummm...what the heck? I haven't run at this pace since I was 30 pounds overweight. Although another BTer's report said it was closer to 11K, which kind of makes me feel better. But, I kept steady and ran the whole thing except walking a bit through the water stations and grabbing Heed. What would you do differently?: More bricks, more bricks, more bricks. Post race
Warm down: Finished. My friend and her family cheered me in. Packed up and grabbed food. Drove back to TO. What limited your ability to perform faster: Just more speed training. Event comments: Other than the buoys in the water, it was a great race and well organized. I was disappointed with my run time, but I met my goal of under 3:15. I hope to get closer to 3 next year. Got up at 5:15. Had oatmeal with blueberries and a soy latte, lots of water. Picked up my friend and drove to Wasaga Beach. We set up our transition areas and walked around trying to keep calm.
Got down to the beach and swam around. I was a bit freaked out because I had never done an OWS that was this long before.
