Swim
  • 36m 15s
  • 1600 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pre-race announcement allowing to swim on either side of buoys. Stayed out left close to breakwall. Water temperature was warmer. Lots of seaweed.

Started out with a great rhythm, breathing excellent. Water was glass along breakwall, once past little chop but did not hinder. Once you turned right to head back towards shore it was much harder to sight. Got off course a little.

Overall excellent swim beat my goal time of 40 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Next time would have swam more central to avoid seaweed. Beat personal best training time by 15 seconds.
Transition 1
  • 04m 4s
Comments:

Swim exit was up a ladder onto a dock. Run approximately 1/4 mile (400 meters) to transition. Overall my transition was good. By the time I ran from water exit to bike legs and shoulder were loose. Feet clean. FORGOT TO PUT HELMET ON!!! Had to turn back at exit to get helmet. Otherwise felt good.

Food consumption consisted of Blocks. Great energy boost.
What would you do differently?:

Helmet on bike seat for a reason. Put on before shoes!

Comments:

Bike route start was terrible. Start out climbing right away. Police stopped traffic at first (only major intersection) intersection blocking road. Had to ride on sidewalk, two guys in front of me rode down left side of road. After that pretty much open back roads. Course was very hilly, no long extended climbs but lots of turns into hills. Hard to carry a lot of speed. Biking is my best event and was trying not to push it so I would have enough energy for the run (worst event). Overall I accomplished goals of finish with a decent time but not pushing and wearing myself out.
What would you do differently?:

Course suited my bike skills perfectly. Above average hill climber. Would liked to have pushed it to drop time to 01:10:00.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

I have not mastered running in bike shoes. Putting knee brace on took up too much time.
What would you do differently?:

Practice running in bike shoes.
Run
  • 1h 05m 33s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Personally I thought the run course was terrible. Not scenic, constantly changing surfaces, and the run through a construction site was not all that appealing.

Race website and pre-race information stated hammer gel would be available at all run aid stations. This was not the case. Next time plan on bringing my own gel for T2.

I exceeded my run expectations, time wise.
Post race
Warm down:

Only about 30 feet from finish line to fence. Not much space for cool down finish. Food tent directly to the right of finish line was crowded with racers sort of forcing a stand still. After grabbing a bagel and banana stretching over by transition.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall I exceeded my expectations. Original goal was to finish in a time of 03:30:00. Need to practice transitions more.

Event comments:

This was only my second triathlon overall and first at this distance. Overall I had an excellent race and completed all my goals. Obviously not much to compare with but overall enjoyed the race.

Course: Run course start was a little confusing. Exit transition and make a right. Half mile to turn around then back by transition. Down along sidewalk with two way traffic. Course was a mixture of pavement, sand, grass, and construction site. Water at transition exit, 1st mile, 2nd mile, 3rd mile, then 3 potential water stations from mile three to five. Run course had very little to no shade. Sun was hot!!! Course was flat.
