Pre-race routine:

My wife and I drove up the night before and spent the night with friends that lived in Rome. That made race morning so much easier. It would have been a hour and 45 min drive to Sloppy Floyd Park from our house in Atlanta. Staying in Rome allowed us to wake up at 6am as it was only a 20min drive to the park. I had 1 boost energy drink, a banana, cliff bar, and some shot blocks along with 32oz of gatorade before the race
Event warmup:

Got in the lake for about 2 min of swimming/sighting.
Swim
  • 08m 13s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Kind of different in the way they did the waves. You submitted an estimated 500 yd swim time and they assigned you to a swim wave. So... there were men and women in the waves. It was nice being able to start side by side with my wife (which I've never done). I started to the left of the bouy line and the plan was for her to try and draft off of me. There seemed to be a lot of fast folks in the first wave, b/c as I was nearing the exit, I could see what seemed like a dozen or so people exiting already. It was about 200 yds from the swim exit to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Swim much more during the week. I've pretty much been neglecting my swim except for the week of a race, where I'll go to the pool twice and swim 1200 yds.....
Transition 1
  • 00m 43s
Bike
  • 30m 36s
  • 12 miles
  • 23.53 mile/hr
Comments:

I started the bike with my lungs in my throat (due to the long run to transition). I guessed there were about 8 people in front of me and set out to catch as many as I could. I felt like I was pushing it harder than I should have b/c my legs were burning. I caught and passed everyone by mile 8 or so (except for the biker on the relay team, who appeared to motorpace behind the cylcle therapy van that was out on the course for the last 4 miles...) and tried to finish with enough of a lead to hold on during the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Run
  • 21m 28s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I came off the bike in first and was hoping I could hold on to my lead on the run. My legs were so tired as I started (I raced a 5k on Thursday night and a 10miler wed night) that I had a hard time getting over the hill leaving transition. Once I got into the woods, I had an opportunity to look behind and I could see 2 guys that were going to be the main guys on my heels. The eventual winner passed me on a short, uphill out and back. He looked fresh and I knew right then there was no way I could out run him today. I did try to stay with him as much as I could b/c I knew running with him would keep the other guys at bay. By the time we got to the damn (the only flat section of the run), he had opened up a 30 second lead while I was just trying to hold it together and keep running. My pace was falling off big time. This course seemed to never end. Up some more hills, around a corner and I finally saw the footbridge to the finish line. Finished and wanted to die. lol!!!
What would you do differently?:

nothing really. I went as fast as I could go, but it wasn't fast enough today- 1st place guy was flying.
Post race
Warm down:

No warmdown- I was eagerly waiting to see my wife. She came in 1st overall woman!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the hills!! haha. that and doing too much during the week from a workout standpoint. Completed a fast 5k on a hilly course on Thursday night, a hard 10+ miler the night before and a big brick on Monday. Not the best race week taper....

Event comments:

I would have given this race a 5 for 'best', had they not botched the awards at the end. There was a miscommunication between the race director and timer regarding what swim waves athletes were in, so when they subtracted out time (from the staggered wave starts), they took off too much time from some competators and awarded them podium spots when they didn't actually place. It was kind of a bummer b/c my wife won the race (her first ever), and someone else got credit/recognition for winning at the awards ceremony. Mistakes happen, and Sarah (the race director) is awesome- she corrected the timing errors by Sunday night and communicated to everyone that raced. Overall, this race is very well organized and a very fun. Lots of volunteers and beautiful venue. I would recommend this one and I think it will continue to grow.
