Swim
Comments: Could have done much better. I was epecting a calm swiom and a storm moving through created some wave action to deal with. Breathing was diffult. Went hard on the swim out and rounded the bouy at 3:15...swim back should have been faster, but I slowed and caught my breath. Stopped too soon in chest deep and took longer to exit. Keep swimming! What would you do differently?: Just need to continue open-water training. Not the same as a pool swim!!! Transition 1
Comments: Very slow at rack. Couldn't find my sunglasses, searched bag and found them in zippered compartment. Felt like I was stumbling brain-dead through transition. Wasted time, probably didn't need glasses. What would you do differently?: Need to go faster through transition! Grab and go...stop wasting time! Bike
Comments: Went hard on bike. Goal was to be over 20 mph and I finished 20.34, so goal met. Didn't drink on ride since it was short, but lost opportunity to adequately fuel for run. What would you do differently?: Drink more...use aero-bottle even for short sprint Transition 2
Comments: Racked bike ok, everything seemed good, then puilled on shoes and calf started acting up from injury 3 weeks earlier. Had a partial calf tear and was very worried about re-injury. Started a slow jog out of transition, race official called me back going out of trans for not having my bib number...had to cross entire transition area again to retrieve race belt I'd forgotten. Calf was hurting as well. What would you do differently?: Use my brain and remember belt. Need to form better transition routines. Run
Comments: Worst run ever. Could not run with injured calf acting up. Walked about 1/3 mile then got into a shuffle jog for the rest of the first mile. Calf got a little better and I ran about an 8:45 2nd mile. Very disappointing, but I knew it might happen and at least I didn't pop the calf again. better not to push it and have a re-injury. What would you do differently?: Had a compression sock I'd been running with and it helps tremendously for calf injuries. Did not wear it beacause of race numbers on leg...should have worn it anyway and it may have helped. Post race
Warm down: walking...felt good after race What limited your ability to perform faster: injury to calf worries limited run Event comments: Surprised to leave the race with hardware after a run performance like that, but the good bike saved me Last updated: 2009-09-20 12:00 AM

Weeks prior to event spent moslty on bike. Nursing a partial calf tear along, so trying to go very easy on runs. Morning of event...a friend and I drove to the race in a real downpour...monsoon-like conditions. Arrived in Alabama and the skies cleared in time for the race.
No time for warmup...just a bit of stretching before swim lineup.
