Swim
Comments: Pretty good swim for first tri. Better than expected time. Very choppy water, pretty nice size swells, took a lot of getting used to. I kept thinking, "dang, this is really hard". Felt like i was getting no where fast, but I guess i went somewhere with a pretty good time for me. Never got in a really good rythm. Swam a little wide going and got a little wide coming back in. Overall, not too bad though. What would you do differently?: Try to stay on course better, get into a better rythm, which would hopefully require a little less energy. Transition 1
Comments: Not a bad transition. 160/324 overall. Ran up beach, stopped and walked up stairs to rest a second, jogged into transition area, wiped feet off with towel, took sip of water, put socks on, slipped shoes on, put helmet & sunglasses on, grabbed bike and jogged out of transition with bike. Did running mount onto bike. Could definitely improve, but overall probably not bad for fist transition. What would you do differently?: Go without socks. Quickly wipe feet off. Run faster from swim to transition area, take a drink on bike not at transition. Bike
Comments: Good ride, pushed hard on the bike. Started out fast getting up to speed, passing some slower riders. Kept pace with person in front of me the entire ride. Passed many people on the bike leg. Only got passed 3 times by people on Tri bikes. Legs were doing well throughout the ride. Upped Cadence at end to stretch legs. Averaging over a 17mph pace was very good, and met my expectations for my first tri. Knocked it out. What would you do differently?: Drink more on the bike, take in more gaterade with electrolytes. Maybe pushed a little hard on the bike, but don't know that I would change that. Need more time in the saddle, building legs. Transition 2
Comments: 73/324 on this transition. Not too bad. Dismounted quickly from bike, ran into transition. Bike up, helmet off, shoes on, grabbed hat and race belt. Ran out of transition. Put hat and race belt on while running. What would you do differently?: Not much. Get bike shoes off quicker. Maybe take bike shoes off on bike before reaching transition. Run
Comments: Slow pace. Was hoping for a little better to avg a 10 min/mile pace. Legs were hurting after bike. Calves were tight, right leg quad wanted to cramp. Ran/walk/ran/walk/ran/walk the entire run. Finished strong into the finish. Overall, not too bad for me on the run avg 11 min pace. Had legs felt better, probably could have gotten the 10 min pace. Just not a fast runner overall. What would you do differently?: Need to stay better hydrated on bike for run. Maybe carry hydration with me on run? Work on bike/run bricks. work on better pace to increase run performance. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and drank some water and settled down. I was pretty exhausted. What limited your ability to perform faster: Need to improve overall fitness. Work on transitions, biking and running paces. Event comments: Good race. Would definitely recomend the Alabama Coastal Triathlon. Team Magic did a good job organizing the race and it was very well run. There was also an Oly distance race. I'm glad I chose this as my first tri. Had a great time. Last updated: 2009-09-21 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:15am, ate breakfast (bagel w/ peanut butter, bananna, cup of coffee). Finished breakfast, used the restroom, gathered gear and headed off to race. Arrived at the race site right at 5:30am and proceeded to set-up transition area (brought trash bags in case it was wet, 1 lg towel, 2 sm towels, goggles, swim cap, ear plugs, bike shoes, socks, helmet, sunglasses, water bottle to squirt feet (didn't need it), running shoes, hat and race belt, garmin 305 watch, water bottles for bike (one water one G2 gaterade). Put everything out on towel, not a bad setup for first transition setup. Worked pretty well. Walked around and checked everything out, got marked, checked out other transition areas.
Got swim cap, goggles and ear plugs about 6:30am and made my way to the beach. Went into ocean and swam about 100yds, got used to the water and moved my arms a legs a bit. Left the water and went back in for a few seconds. Finished and got ready to line up for race start. I was 213 out of 499 or so.
