Run
Comments: Started with Bschraff (Ben) and Schmize (scott). They were both with me for the first mile. Then Ben started to move ahead - pretty much kept his carrot in sight for the first 4. I wanted to run with Scott but he had told me if I was feeling good to go ahead and I was feeling pretty good (sorry Scott). Found a guy from the Quad cities that was going 6:50ish pace and we ran the first 10 miles together. Felt really good. Chatted and helped pass the time. About mile 10 is when the heat combined with the gravel path started to get me. My feet hurt really badly from the gravel. Very happy to get off of that trail and into the industrial park. This is where it started to fall apart for me - mile 11. I started to get a little dizzy and started to have flashbacks to the marathon. Slowed down a little and kept telling myself that I needed to finnish. Slowing down wasn't going to get me to the finnish and the much need stopping of my legs and faster. So I kept plodding along. Finally saw and heard the crowd. Saw Tracy who held up 2 fingers. 2nd??? I thought for sure I was no higher than 5th or 6th. I had never seen any other women in front of me. But yep I was second! The winner was 4 minutes ahead of me which would have explained why I never saw her. What would you do differently?: Maybe taken a salt tablet or 2. I was caked in salt at the end. Other than that for a race that was not an A race for me not much. Post race
Warm down: Walked into the awesome recovery tent. Found Nick (the guy that I was with for the 1st 10) congratulated him - found Ben who finnished ahead of me and watched some of the 1/6 barrel donkeys come in. Drank some water and tried to a little (didn't go down too well) What limited your ability to perform faster: Basically that I had pretty much no incentive. After the marathon I have been pretty down about racing and training. I had thought about trying to break 1:30 at this race and I think if it hadn't been so warm I might have. But that heat was not good. Event comments: MORE WATER!! There really needed to be a station in that last 2 miles. I know it is rarely this hot in November but they should have planned accordingly. EDIT: I almost forgot to thank all of the donkeys!! This was the most fun I have ever had at a race. I love being a donkey! Last updated: 2009-10-01 12:00 AM

This is an odd time of day for a race. So I was a little uncertain of how to handle the nutrition. I also was teaching a 7:30 spin class. I ended up having a little protein/carb mix pre class and same post/class and a banana and english muffin about 1 hr before start. Drove out to Lake Mills pretty early so I could get a good parking spot - got my packet said Hi to some donkeys.
Ran an easy mile at about 8 min mile pace and lots of stretching to make sure I got an stiffness form spinning out.
