Pre-race routine:

Up at 6am. Ate a bowl of oatmeal with wheat germ and a sliced banana. Stretched with special emphasis on the glutes for about 10 minutes. Drank an 8 oz. glass of orange juice on the way out the door. I drove to race site, picked up my timing chip and did walked around the start/finish area taking in the pre-race atmosphere.
Event warmup:

Ran an easy 2.75 miles on the race course, stopped by my car to shed my gloves and warm up jacket, then did (6-8) 100 meter striders. Did some more stretching at the staring line before race start.

Comments:

The race was about 20 minutes late getting started this morning. It was supposed to have an 'elite' wave start for sub 7 minute milers, starting 1 minute before the rest of the field. That didn't happen - everyone started together. I was apprehensive going into this race, since I'm treating piriformis syndrome (a deep muscle ache in my right glute). I felt it a few times during the race, but the muscle released enough that I was able to run 100% from start to finish. I felt like I paced my energy stores pretty well for this event. I slowed up a little after mile 1 when I noted by my split that I had gone out too fast and would not be able to maintain that pace for 4 miles. Strong finish.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing that I can think of at the moment.
Post race
Warm down:

I ran an easy 1.4 loop on the course, then did some stretching while waiting for the event organizers to post preliminary results.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Piriformis - muscle ache in the right glute. Gets painful after about 4 miles of running.

Event comments:

This was a good race for me. It was a little disappointing that the race got off to such a late start (20+ minutes late start). Nice conditions for running fast this morning, sunny, clear skies, light winds out of the NW, temps. in the low 40's. Large race field. One of the race organizers told me it was a record size - they anticipated 2,300 participants would show up this morning. Despite the size of the crowd and much of the race being on narrow asphalt paths, after the first mile, I did not feel crowded among other competitors.
