Pre-race routine:

ate lots of carbs and drank lots of liquid three days out. eating much better in general. i didn't sleep very well night before race. i set my alarm for 4:00 AM and ate about 1/3 of a hoagie. at 6:00 AM ate 1/2 sandwich of whole wheat, peanut butter/jam and 1/2 banana. drank glass of water and cup of coffee. i was so full, my stomach felt pretty weird. i guess it worked though, because i felt i had energy once the race started.
Event warmup:

because it was so cold at start time, walked/jogged longer than usual. stretched longer than usual. maybe should do this all the time.

Comments:

I said i wasn't going to run marathons anymore. after training for the 1/2 marathon held four weeks ago, decided i'd give marathon one more try. very glad i did. i peed three times during the race, so i guess i hydrated correctly. maybe the cold weather caused this also, but i surely didn't get any cramps. i drank so much the day before that i thought i'd float away. i drank two gulps of gatorade every water stop. i had gel pack every other water stop. that seemed to work out well. i used ipod which helped block out distractions. i tried not to focus on mile markers, and instead picked a spot ahead, and ran to it. did that throughout the race. at the risk of seeming rude, i didn't pay any attention to other runners. i tried to acknowledge volunteers with a small hand wave. walked thru planned water stops. didn't have to take unplanned stop until reaching mile 22. never ran that far w/o stopping. i felt pretty strong thru just past mile 21. then used mental strength to get me thru. ran up ALL hills at end of course. passed off lots of people. got my mojo back after mile 24. the excitement of knowing i was going to have a good race psyched me up. nice picture with paul ross after the race. everyone that saw me running said i looked strong. AWESOME!!! MY PR BY 12 MINUTES!!!
What would you do differently?:
