Swim
Comments: Was just trying to be smooth, relax and feel good coming out of the water. Mission accomplished, but didn't set any kind of speed records. One day I'll feel comfortable enough to be more aggressive in the swim and exert some more energy. Water was choppy once you got about half way out. Neglected my swim training this season, so knew I wasn't going to be great. Need to swim more and get to the 1:45/100M mark. What would you do differently?: Get aggressive from an effort persepctive. Transition 1
Comments: Was surprised I finished second in my age group. Felt slow, primarily because I was trying to pull on a long sleeve jersey for the ride while I was soaking wet. I knew this wouldn't be easy, but did not want to freeze my arse off on the ride. Also had to pack everything up in your bag and zip it up, because you don't come back to T1...they pick up bags for you and bring it to T2. What would you do differently?: Not much. Bike
Comments: Terrible time. A combination of being woefullly undertrained, the wet roads, cold weather, and hilly course (by Texas standards) made for a poor time. Last year, I finished this same course (for the most part) in 1:13:30. Goes to show you how much difference training will make. Saw two bad crashes...one involving a car. See post in Texas forum on US Open thread. What would you do differently?: More training. Transition 2
Comments: Nice dismount...was out of shoes at good point and hopped off right at line. Meant to take long sleeve bike jersey off for run, but forgot. Could have tied it around waist on run, but never got too hot so just left it on. What would you do differently?: Take off bike jersey. Run
Comments: Was happy with 8:00/mile pace given lack of training. Was just happy to have that left in my legs after rough bike. Legs felt REALLY tight, but never locked up or cramped. Feeling mighty sore today though! What would you do differently?: Train and get better base. Running long distances isn't terribly fun for me, especially with foot issues. But hopefully I'll get those fixed. Kicking around the Dallas Rock n Roll HalfMary in March to get me more regimented on a longer distance training plan. I'm convinced that a better base will pay dividends on sprint and Oly courses. Post race
Warm down: Lots of good food to choose from...bananas, oranges, variety of bagels, etc. They really take good care of the athletes at this race. Got my free beer afterwards. Listened to the awards presentation and then loaded up. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training. Also only did one race this year, as opposed to 5-6 last year. Event comments: Sounds like there were shuttle issues this year, which should not happen in third year of race. And still have rough spots on bike course. But it is a very well run race overall, and the premiere event in the DFW area. They put a lot of time, effort and thought into this race, and it pays off with a smoothly run first class event. Left the house at 5:00, set up T2 and hitched a ride to T1/swim with buddy. Turned out to be fortuitous because I heard many had issues with the shuttle. From the moment I woke up, the recurring thought was "This rainy, cold weather is going to be MISERABLE." Got to T1, and rain let up, but it continued to be intermittent all day and we never saw the sun. Got T1 set up, and then waited for the sprinters to go off. Was a huge fan of the fact that there was no 30-minute break between the Oly and Sprint racers this year like there was Year One (don't know what they did last year because I raced Oly last year).
NONE! Too damn cold and rainy. Probably means I should do MORE of a warmup, but all I wanted to do was to keep as much clothing on as possible until it was time to put the wetsuit on.
