Swim
Comments: It took me a good 20 minutes to relax and get my breathing under control. My swim was slower than my pool swims and I think that was more due to the sighting and not swimming straight lines. However, I don't think it was a disaster. The weekend swims at Lucky's Lake did help here. I just need to get a coach and work on technique. The 2:58 is about 45 seconds per 100 slower than my pool swims. On a positive note I swam the whole course with the exception of stopping one or two times to get a good feel for my direction. The swim got crowded at times and I was hit and kicked several times. It was most crowded around the buoys on the turns. I noticed a couple of times my legs were already having signs of cramping. No where near what I expierenced on the bike and run but I remember thinking that is not good and hoped it was not a precursor to events later. I was wrong it was! What would you do differently?: I have to get a coach and start doing drills. I only went to the pool and swam distances no drills what so ever. I have get better here before my ironman November 12th. Transition 1
Comments: Took my time here and still left my sunglasses which was not that bad but would have liked to have them. Took the time to put on sunscreen and had to pull my tri suit down to put on my HR monitor strap. Was not sure if it was waterproof and did not wear my Garmin 305 or the HR strap. When I got to tranistion I had to turn on the watch and let it sink with a satellite. That was mistake could have done this before swim start and will next time put strap on leave watch at bike. Took some water What would you do differently?: Not having watch sinked with satellites and chest strap on was a mistake could have done this before swim start and will next time put strap on leave watch at bike on and sinked. Bike
Comments: This is where my demise started. I was on plan for the bike at 18.7 MPH avg up to mile 47 and then both of my hamstrings cramped painfully. I had to get off the bike. This happened right before the last water station. I got off the bike and layed on the sidewalk trying to gather myself and allowing my legs to uncramp. The mystery is why? I felt I was drinking enough and had enough salt but never the less this is the same issue I had a couple of weeks earlier on the same course. I lost 25 minutes trying to get my legs back and the volunteers feeding me bananas and fluids. I got back on the bike got back upt to 18 MPH and about 5 miles later I cramped again though not as bad but again got off the bike for about 10 minutes before I could start up again. Turned on 545 and limped back around 15 MPH to the bike finish. I now was wondering if I was going to be able to finish. What would you do differently?: One I would do more intervals during training. Two drink more fluids Infinit. I was taking in about 20 oz an hour and was not enough. Three dial in the cramping issue before the race. I had some issues a week before the race and did not feel like I worked hard enough to determine what happened. Transition 2
Comments: Took my time here as well. I was hurting from the cramps and tried to gather myself here hoping I could workout the cramps so that I could run. What would you do differently?: Solve the cramping issues Run
Comments: I had a terrible run and walked 95% of the 13.1 due to the cramps. Anytime I tried to run my hamstrings cramped and had to back off. 15 min. mile is a joke from my training but there was no way on this day I could have done any better. I tried to run several times and was never able to maintain it. What would you do differently?: Solve the cramping again. I would also do more brick workouts. I don't think I did enough of these and I did not do any with any runs over 3 miles. I will change that next time. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: CRAMPS on the bike and the heat! Lack of swim drills, lack of brick training, and being off kilter from the beginning of the race by over sleeping and not getting enough rest the night before. I am going to do this race again next year and I know I can finsih in the low 6 hour range. Event comments: Would have given it a 5 if not for the run. I met some great people and enjoyed the week leading up to the race. I wish my wife could have been there but we made the right decision by staying with our daughter. Had I known the college graduation would have been the same weekend as the race I would have chosen another race to do. I will be back to do this next year and have a mission to do what I know I was capable of. Last updated: 2009-10-27 12:00 AM

My demise I think began with prerace. I was rushed Saturday night getting out to Disney to check my bike in after flying back from Raleigh, NC. I got home and had to get my tranistion bag ready. I did not get in bed until 9:30PM and the plan was to get up at 3:30AM. I set my alarm but forgot to turn it on. Luck for me my dog woke me up at 3:40AM to go outside. She never does this must have been fate. I rushed around went out the door and forgot my timing chip. I was about 15 minutes late leaving and planned on picking up Dewcubs at this vacation home at 4:15AM. I arrived at 4:30. Was not a good start to the day but I can think of worse issues. I only had time to eat a half bagel and peanut butter with some water.
Got to tranistion about 5AM. Mixed all of my Infinit fluid in two 20 oz water bottles and my 40 ounce Inviscid Speedfil. This is the point I realized I left my chip. Went down to the water and went to the restroom. While in the restroom I left my cell phone. Realized this later and it added stress to the fact I was doing the race, missing my chip, and now cell phone. Wish wife could have made this event would have taken a lot of stress. She stayed back in NC for our daughters graduation which was the right thing to do. Found phone in bathroom and got a chip at swim start all is well now.
