Pre-race routine:

slept like crap even tho I was not worried about this event - mindset was to just have fun, and my training was putting me at an 8:00 pace. Didn't do a good carbo-load the night before which I probably should have. Instead I had McDonalds for dinner.

For Breakfast I had 2 bowls of cereal, and on the ride to Lake Mills had a cereal bar. Not used to an event that starts around lunchtime. Maybe I should think about that next time :)
Event warmup:

Walked from my car to the starting line!
Stretched for a bit and just rested.
Run
  • 1h 45m 42s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

no gels - bad call
What would you do differently?:

start just a little bit slower, maybe about 10 seconds per mile for the first 5k. I think that would have bought me a better final 5k.

Would have taken 2 gels

Wouldn't have wore my black long sleeve under armor shirt.
Post race
Warm down:

drank beer

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my overall ability to run faster!

Event comments:

Funny, I gave them my name and they handed me my race packet. I didn't bother to look at anything. Turns out they gave the the wrong bag. I was "Steven Schroeder" from Lake Mills, age 31!

Performance: Good
I heard mile 1 was 7:45. My dilema here is I like to start slower and build up. I always (repeat ALWAYS) do better, probably cuz I'm in my HR zone, when I start slower and gradually build up. However, the first mile is very downhill-ish so it's kind of a waste to not go faster. I heard the 4 mile time from someone was just over 32 minutes so I knew I was on pace w/ 8:00, considering I was mostly done with hills by then.
Course: great course. First mile is flat to downhill. Miles 2-4.8 are the most hilly, but only 2 or 3 sizeable hills, the rest are mild "bumps". From 4.8 on it's basically flat, with a good chunk of 6.2 to about 11 are on a gravel bike trail.
