Pre-race routine:

My wife and I got to the rec center plenty early. I don't like being rushed and since it was her first tri I thought it might help her relax if she could watch the earlier heats for a while before we started. Tried to keep food intake balanced over the course of the day. It is a little more difficult to plan for an event that starts in the evening.
Event warmup:

There was not much opportunity for warmup so just did some stretching to get loosened up. Had about 3 minutes in the pool before the start to get a couple of lengths in.
Swim
  • 30m
  • 1817 meters
  • 01m 39s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a pretty decent swim for me. The only complaint was that the clocks were malfunctioning so the only way to watch the time was to look at my watch. Not the end of the world but definitely takes a second or two to read the watch and then back into the rhythm. I really think I could have gotten a couple of more laps had I known how much time I had left.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

10 minute fixed transition. Changed into my running/biking gear and headed upstaris.
Bike
  • 30m
  • 9.91 miles
  • 19.82 mile/hr
Comments:

My bike did not go quite the way I wanted it to. It is my weakest area right now so it's a little frustrating. Oh well, at least I know what to work on. Also, at one point I went switch the display from mph to distance and accidentally hit the pause/reset button. I couldn't get it re-started so had to have a volunteer come over and record my distance so I could start the program over again. I figure I lost at least a 1/2 mile from that mistake. What is odd is that there were at least 2 other people in my heat that did the exact same thing. But, moved and and tried to finish strong.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder on the bike.
Not push the wrong buttons.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

10 minute fixed transition
Run
  • 30m
  • 3.55 miles
  • 08m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

I think I used up a little more of my legs than I wanted to on the bike so I couldn't quite hold my planned paces. Still did ok but really wanted to hit 4 miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit and talked to some of the other people that were hanging around. Grabbed some food and headed home to catch the end of superbowl.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike fitness

Event comments:

I thought it was a well organized and well staffed race. The volunteers were very eager to get water or anything else the competitors needed during the race and were even helping to cheer everyone throughout the event. I had fun and I know my wife really enjoyed the experience of her first tri. She already said that she wants to make this an annual thing for us to do together. She hasn't jumped into triathlon with both feet yet but I can see the bug starting to grow. Maybe it is just a matter of time now.

EDIT: Now that the official results are posted it looks like my techincal difficulties on the bike cost me 2nd place in my age group. Was only .033 miles behind 2nd place. BAH! Really frustrating. I'm not sure if it helps or hurts more though that some superstar came in and crushed us both by over 4 miles. Impressive.
