Pre-race routine:

I ate granola bars and drank water prerace and had a Hammer gel about 10 mins prior to swim start.

Event warmup:

Stretched. Thats it.
Swim
  • 50m 49s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

My intent was not to swim this one too hard but it seemed to take forever. I was so glad to get out of the water. I tried to take an outside line from the beginnng but kept drifting back over into the buoys where most of the swimmers were. There was periodic bumping the whole swim and several times I got in a big group and had to swim back out away from them. I even got cracked pretty hard on the head once. I wore my new speed suit for the first time in a race and it rubbed two places on my neck raw. I didnt notice it until later when I dumped water over my head and it stung. I thought an insect was biting me at first and I swatted at it.

What would you do differently?:

Focus more on staying outside. Correct the speedsuit issue. Swim harder.
Transition 1
  • 04m 35s
Comments:

I jogged up from the lake. I took my time in the transition area to get myself ready here and didnt get in a big hurry so I could make sure to have a good bike.

What would you do differently?:

Move a little quicker.
Bike
  • 2h 40m 46s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.90 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was my best effort of any race. My goal was to hit .85 LTP and I ended up at .88 which is good. The course was flat with some rollers. I kept a good strong pace for the whole race. I used a few different cyclists as rabbits to help me stay focused and motivated.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was as good as I could do.
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

This was a much better transition. I was very happy coming off the bike with my effort.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 2h 17m 26s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

I started off the run a little too fast so I tried to turn it down some. After about mile 4 the heat was starting to hit me hard. My HR wasnt that high but I wasnt able to run too hard. I used every aid station. At first I was taking water and sponges but later I was taking ice and bananas. I ate ice and dumped some down my shirt and back pocket to stay cool. For the entire 2nd half of the race I was carrying a cup of ice. I did some walking but was able to keep running. I decided on the 2nd lap that I would begin my finish line push after the last aid station which was after I got out of the grassy hell section. It was hard but I was able to finish reasonbly strong.
What would you do differently?:

Do more workouts in heat to prepare for this type of heat.
Post race
Warm down:

Took lots of water and sat down for 10 mins. After that ate pizza and drank gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat.

Event comments:

They really need to redo that run course. It is entirely too syiffling hot in the grassy trail section.
