Transition 1
Comments: kind of a long sloppy water exit and felt uneasy on my feet, i think the carpet was floating up. then a long up hill run to the bikes. they were marked pretty well so i didnt have to look too hard. What would you do differently?: should have used the available suit peelers, felt like i was running in slow-mo Bike
Comments: my goal was to stay at a high RPM on the hills since i hadn't been able to ride any at all (closest was simulating hills on the spinner bike while in Iraq) i tried not to change my speed when getting passed, take in alot of fluids and stay ahead of nutrion without getting sick. I had my smuckers uncrustable about 10 miles in and it was delish! managed notto over-do it on the big hills and had plenty of legs left for the run so I was happy with the time split when I came in. the wind ultimately wasnt too bad. the hills were about as big as i expected, definately bigger than i had "trained" for. What would you do differently?: push it a little more on the flats, had more legs than anticipated Transition 2
Comments: actually felt like this went well. got a quick snack in while on the move. it was a grassy transition zone (seperate from T2, and I didnt have to worry about hurting my feet while running in socks. What would you do differently?: nothing, this transition went well Run
Comments: run went very well. i hadnt practiced holding ice in my hands and didnt realize how cold it would feel. i held it as long as i could and then stuck it in my jersey. i avoided sports drinks for the first few aid stations and then started adding them in every other. had a few gels as well. still affriad to try coke. the pacing was good and i kept expecting it to fall off of low 7s but they just kept rolling in 1 after the next. even the miles with the hills didnt put too big of a dent into me. it was a great course for fans, i think i saw my sister-in-law like 5 ot 6 times. What would you do differently?: start a moderate kick at 1 mile out, perhaps a few more calories in early on. Post race
Warm down: drank beer and walked around, got a massage. that was my warm down :) What limited your ability to perform faster: not being able to ride my bike at all before the race. Event comments: the day before the race was very hot and you had to park over a mile away from the tent, i was very nervous based on how things were run and how hot it was that this race was going to suck. i was wrong. cool finishing shoot with a yellow brick road and dorothy waving me it. awards were lack luster, the webtsite said awards for top three and then they handed out on two deep. good, plenty of calories in (and waste out). pretty good stretching, got there with plenty of time to get my transition squared away. it was a little hectic with parking and then getting on a bus to T1. the important thing is i didnt forget my bike shoes like i did in new orleans!
i spent too much time getting things ready and not enough time stretching / warming up. they said the day before that it probably wouldnt be wetsuit legal, but then it was, so that threw my mental game a bit. i wasnt planning on wearing my leg compression sleves if i wasnt wearing a wetsuit. then i couldnt decide if i should wear them or not. kept debating whether they would add drag on the bike or not. should have tested this theory sooner, riding with them more.
