Total Time = 1h 03m 15s
Overall Rank = 68/194
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 22/52
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 AM, had some oatmeal. Got to trans area about 6:00 AM.
Event warmup:

Stretched legs/arms. Swam 100-150 yards.
Swim
  • 10m 22s
  • 585 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

My first triathlon, first open water swim! Since this was my first open water swim I took a little off in terms of pace. Breathing was O.K., not too many collisions with others etc.
What would you do differently?:

Practice open water swimming. Go out harder next time, 10:22 seems a little slow.
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

Felt very relaxed coming out of water, getting bike gear on. A little too relaxed now seeing the time.
What would you do differently?:

Move quicker. Not sure yet, it's my first one! I'm sure all areas of my T1 need to be different.
Bike
  • 29m 55s
  • 9 miles
  • 18.05 mile/hr
Comments:

My first race of any kind on a bicycle. Just bought the bike a couple of weeks before the race (crash course in road biking). The hills were tough. Shifting probably wasn't the smoothest.
What would you do differently?:

Bike more. Use clipless pedals instead of toe-clips.
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

Since I had toe clips there wasn't much to it. Just rack my bike, remove helmet, that's it.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure yet. Next time will use clipless shoes so need to dismount cleanly and change shoes (do I wear socks?).
Run
  • 18m 47s
  • 2.4 miles
  • 07m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs were a little tight after the bike ride. Tightness went away after 1/2 mile but then there was the big hill. In the last mile I paid attention to anyone with an "F" on the back of their leg which signified my age group. That actually helped as I made sure and passed anyone with the "F" on their leg (4 or 5 people in the last mile).
What would you do differently?:

Run more. Do bike then run training to get body used to that transition.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water, ate some fruit, walked around for 5-10 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience and more training.

Event comments:

Can't compare this to any other Tri since it was my first one. But if triathlons in general are like this I'm hooked. What a rush! Now I see why people do these.
