Pre-race routine:

Ate carefully the day before, sticking with protein, cheese and rice. No veggies or fiber. Woke up at 5AM, coffee, 2 eggs and 3 canadian bacon. Had half a large can of sugar-free red bull when I arrived at the race. Racked the bike and sat with Kathy for a while as the winds really picked up.
Event warmup:

None today.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 0 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim canceled due to high winds.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe another test drive in the Y wearing the wetsuit. More speed work overall in my swim training.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

TT start for the sprint from bike transition, so plenty of time to get settled, etc. Took a caffeinated gel prior to leaving. Wore socks and running shoes rather than bike shoes because I was unsure of myself on Kathy's Kuota.
What would you do differently?:

Sunscreen. More practice rides on the Kuota (more than a 10 minute ride around the block?)
Bike
  • 44m 34s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 16.83 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on the bike and passed a bunch of folks. My run suffered the first two miles, so in context of my bike fitness, I went too fast.
What would you do differently?:

Done more bike training prior to the race.
Transition 2
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

Fast transition, just needed to grab my hat and a gel. Had to stop to pee, but that was prior to the run and in transition time.
Run
  • 30m 34s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Sun came out and the wind slowed down. Was wearing all black, so fairly comfortable in the morning temps with the sun. Legs, esp shins started to ache immediately. Ran first five mins not stop and then had to take a :20 walk break every few minutes until 18:00. At that point, my legs felt better and I ran steadily. Last 3/4 mile or so was fast run, almost sprint.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a few bricks added to the training plan. I was under-trained for the race for sure.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, gatorade, a nectarine and sat in the shade with the Pike.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Brick training, bike training was insufficient.

Event comments:

On time other than weather delay. Keith should be commended for recognizing the danger to the newbies and canceling the swim.

If the race had kicked off at 6:30AM and the weather changed while the start was in progress, it would have been butt ugly.
