Run
Comments: The whole reason I started running alot was because I was pissed off after Timberman in August and vowed to destroy it next time after blowing up on the run. I generally like the bike more but have come to enjoy running now that I'm getting better at it....anyway, Shelbie and I both wanted to be under 1:40. We both have been running a good amount since we did Niantic in September, but I was really untested and wasn't sure how fast I could go. I usually take a Gu during something this length but decided this time I was just running the entire time and maybe took a couple small sips of gatorade on the course and that was it. It was definitely the way to go. My goal was to really go out and run 7:30 pace but I generally get amped up for a race and run a lot harder than I do during training. After the first mile I had lost Shelbie and then after the first couple I was starting to second guess my pace, but just held on and only had a couple moments on a couple of the rollers where I was questioning my ability but my breathing was good and my form felt good and my legs felt strong the entire time. Towards the end I realized I had it easily and ran a faster 11th mile before slowing down on the next little uphill. I didn't realize how close I was to 1:35 until the very last few steps or I would have made sure to be in the 1:34s. AG rank doesn't seem that good, but 6 of the top 10 were in my AG...so what does that tell you about my AG. Shelbie took 31 out of 544 in her AG and ran a 1:39:57 which is awesome! Good run for both of us. My splits: 7:10 7:05 7:07 7:12 7:06 7:14 7:16 7:19 7:17 7:07 6:57 (fast 11th mile. Realized I had it locked up so passed a bunch of people) 7:17 (little hill was unexpected) 7:08 last .27 at 6:13 pace up the hill to finish (should have started my kick a little earlier but the fish line was sort of hidden so I wasn't really sure how close I was) What would you do differently?: Nothing. I'm really happy with the results. It was a good confidence booster. I generally go out hard because I don't like trying to make up time from doing a couple easy miles early on. Post race
Warm down: Got a bottle of water, chugged it while waiting for Shelbie. When she finished we walked to car and took off before getting trapped in parking lot. We were out of there within a few minutes so I didn't really "warm-down" properly. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training volume and time, but I'm building to be faster and shattered my time from September by over 7 minutes. I'm also 5'9" and about 185lbs so am not exactly the prototype for a fast runner. My arm is the size of the legs on some of those runners. Event comments: It was cool. Shelbie (wife) and I drove up to the Cape House in Eastham the night before and ate at Abbas in Orleans which is awesome. Had lobster & shrimp pad thai, some apps and one beer. Woke up, stopped at hot chocolate sparrow on the way down and had some coffee and a cliff bar. Drank a bottle of water on the 30 minute drive to Hyannis.
I ran around a half mile with Shelbie. Did some pickups to race pace. I thought about taking a Gu and drinking water but wanted to change my plan and consume less so I just hung around. Changed my shirt a couple times and went with the lightest layers I could. I noticed a lot of people way over dressed who would later be regretting it.
