Pre-race routine:

Woke up before my alarm which I always like. Got up and had a couple bananas, orange juice, and a little carrot juice. My Dad was running a little bit late so just waited for him and headed over to Littleton. Love racing so close to home!
Event warmup:

Did a little less than 10 minutes on the bike and a little over 5 minutes of running. I also swam about 75 yards or so.
Swim
  • 12m 9s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not very happy with my swim. The whole pack came out extremely fast and I tried to hang with them, which was not a smart move. For some reason my goggles were taking in water too! I had to stop twice to let the water out of them and spent most of the race with water in my eyes which kinda stunk. It didn't happen in the warm up so I'm not sure what happened.
What would you do differently?:

I just did a pacing drill with my swim class on Wednesday to show how people come out way too fast! Unfortunately I certainly did this. I need to make sure I stick to my own pace and race my own race.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Unfortunately no transition times which really stinks! But T1 was not good for me. First off, I had one of the worst spots in transition. I had a long run with the bike, but what are you going to do. I used a rubber band that was too long so and it didn't really serve its purpose of keeping the shoe in the same spot. Then once I got my shoe in, the band didn't brake! I had to reach down and snap it with my hand, which was extremely ironic because I was talking to my buddy Phil about using the rubber bands before the race and I told him how that had never happened to me. Another problem is the strap of my left shoe came out. I had to finagle it through the little loop on the fly which is quite difficult to do.
What would you do differently?:

Use shorter rubber bands and hope that the strap does come out on my shoes again.
Bike
  • 28m 37s
  • 10 miles
  • 20.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Really pushed it on the bike. I went really hard up a few of the hills and slowed down quite a bit trying to recover from them. Besides that, I was happy with my ride.
What would you do differently?:

Work on my climbing
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Had a good T2 and everything went smoothly
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 19m 57s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

Pushed hard on the run. I passed a guy in my age group, Sean Sullivan (nice kid!) during transition and kept him at bay until we entered the wood section where he passed me. My plan was to just stick with him and then make a pass at the end. Right when we were heading out of the woods, he cranked up the hill and put a little distance between. I started my kick extremely early and tried to get him. I got really close, but my HR was up at 195-198 and I just couldn't keep it up :(. I ended up slowing down and just cruised into the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Get Faster! I worked really hard out there, but I will get faster!
Post race
Warm down:

Said hi to Kristen and walked her to her car. Apparently she was yelling for me during transition the 3 different times I was in/coming out of there, but I didn't think she was coming so I never noticed. Sorry babe! I chatted with Phil and Chad for a while and then walked down about a half mile on the course to wait for my Dad. I ran the rest of the way in with him, which was great.

I also road home after the race which was about 13.5 miles.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I really pushed it during this one and just will continue to train to get stronger and faster.

Event comments:

This a really fun race and will be the only repeat race from my last year's schedule. I shaved about 3.5 minutes off last year's time, which I'm very happy about. I really liked this one and was pumped my dad got to do it as he's been battling a groin issue. It was also awesome to race/hang out with Chad (congrats on becoming a triathlete, you did great!) and Phil. It was nice great to get on the podium again too!
