Swim
Comments: This was the most contact I've had during a swim. It was a total melee. One guy actually TRIED to rip my cap and goggles off. There was no end to it for the whole 1.2mi. Overall it felt like my navigation was good, though I zigzagged a little on the way out and almost shortcut the first turn bouy. The way back was much cleaner and straight. What would you do differently?: My waterskiing wetsuit continues to be a burden. Santa will be bringing a new one this year. Transition 1
Comments: Faster than I expected. I was worried I'd have trouble finding my bike, but the rack numbering worked out. Bike
Comments: Nutrition plan worked well. I had an aerobottle, and one in the cage. I drank these on the 1st loop while I got to know the aid staions. 2nd and 3rd loops I powdered my aerobottle with accelerade before the aid station and grabbed an H2O to fill and mix. What would you do differently?: Push a bit harder, and drafted Tim Deboom while I had the chance :) Transition 2
Comments: I ended up dragging one of my shoes for a bit. The entry to the transition was through the above-mentioned construction, and through some technical turns in a parking lot. It made getting out of the shoes before getting off the bike a bit difficult. Re-application of sunscreen was a must. They had sunscreeners, but I had already Bulfrogged it up :). What would you do differently?: Practice the shoe-off method more. Run
Comments: Did alot of walking. I tried to interval it here and there by watching my HR. For about 2/3 of the 2nd lap I did a 5min run followed by a walk until my HR got to 130. That worked until the last mile. There was nothing getting me going at that point. Until then I was putting in 11 and 12 min miles with a few 13+ here and there. Last mile clocked in at 17:34. I managed to run around the last bend to the finish though. Nutrition again went decently. My fuel belt was enough ot keep me well from aid station to aid station. 2nd lap I noticed I was stuggleling, so I downed 2 bottles, stopped for a stretch and then started the above-mentioned interal routine. Enduralytes also were a life-sustainer. What would you do differently?: More bricks. My body just doesn't know what to do with itself when I ask it to run when it's already tired. I'm going to focus more on bricks and end-of-workout runs. Post race
Warm down: Plenty of water. Walked a little. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not a Runner Event comments: Great race! Great for the racers, great for the spectators. Great destination for us cold-weather folks. Last updated: 2005-10-31 12:00 AM

Followed the training plan to the T. The day before there was open water swimming available at the lake course, so I did a mini tri to get a feel for the course and the terain. We went through the gauntlet of packet pickup lines, and left the bike in the transition for the night.
I filled a small cooler with ice packs and my fuel belt, and used an extra large duffel as my transition bag. This kept the bottles cool until T2. Everything else was just lists, lists, lists. Flying cross country for a big event is more logistics than I'm used to. Keeping lists was all I could do to make sure I had everything. Even after I checked off everything I still did a whole race runthrough in my head, including flat tire possibilities, just to be sure I had everything.
I did some basic stretching in the transition area, and made sure I was one of the first to get in the water for my wave. There wasn't much time to really warmup, so the water tread was about it.
