Pre-race routine:

Drove up to Chattanooga the night before (only about 2 hours away). Ate at Olive Garden with friend who was also running the race. Finished dinner around 8:00. Went back to hotel and got everything ready for race morning. Was in bed by 9:00 and asleep by 10:00.

Saturday morning - woke up at 6:00 and got ready. Drove to race site and arrived around 6:45. Since it was such a small race (only about 450 people combined between the marathon and the 10 mile run) they were able to let us in the church recreation room until the start of the race. Ate my marathon bar around 6:45 and drank a bottle of water and some powerade. Used the bathroom - again since such a small race, we had REAL bathrooms with sinks to use. Lined up for the race right at 7:30.
Event warmup:

Brr - it was SO cold outside early Saturday morning. I think that start temp was only around 38 degrees. Sat in the church's recreation room until the start of the race. I have discovered that I like to use the first mile of the race to warm up. Maybe not the best thing to do, but it seems to work out okay for me.

It was funny waiting for the race to start. It felt like a 5k race since it was so small - you didn't really realize that you were about to be started to run 26+ miles.

Comments:

I love it. I'm starting to really love running. I have had this barrier for the past 2 years where running has just been something that I do to stay in shape and because it gives you such a feeling of accomplishment. But on Saturday, I loved being out there.

Had ups and downs - just like you will on any long run. I've come to take the lows with the highs. The race seemed to fly by. I was amazed when I reached mile 18 - it felt like no time at all had passed. I had minimum trouble with my legs. A little knee pain around mile 18, but I moved to more level ground and it seemed to dissapate. Felt REALLY good after the race.
What would you do differently?:

Pace my first half a little better. I knew that I needed to do 8:26/mile to make my Boston Qualifying Time. My first half I was averaging in the low 8:00s. I'm disappointed with some of those splits in the 20 miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Got something to drink (diet coke, water AND powerade). Went to car to get phone and wait for friend to finish. Taken by surprise when he came in only 6 minutes after me. Stretched out for a little while, watched while he enjoyed some of the post-race food and were in the car back home within an hour of finishing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to train at a faster pace. I have only done one longer run in the mid 8 minute mile pace (the half marathon 2 weeks ago). Instead, I've been training around a 9:30 or higher minute mile pace. I think that if I do some longer runs at least at 9:00/mile, if not at 8:30/mile, then I'll be able to push it down some.

Event comments:

The course set-up was terrific and everything from the volunteers to the post-race activities were great for the size race that it is. I would definitely recommend this marathon to anyone (except maybe first timers because of the lack of crowd support). It is a really relaxed race - you don't have to worry about being jostled about in a huge crowd, you get to see your other running friends several times out on the course and it's a really pretty area.

I'm really happy with my run. My main goal was to BQ, but I think that I'm going to take this past weekend as a "training" run and head off to West Palm beach in a few weeks to attempt again. However, I managed to knock 40 minutes off of my previous PR from just a year ago and after checking the results page this morning, I noticed that I took 3rd in my age group. Guess I need to see about getting that award shipped. :)
