Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6.30 on the dot, sans alarm. Felt as though I'd slept well. Had 2 pieces of banana bread, dressed and walked out the door. Had laid everything out the day before and felt super organised. Light ride down to St Kilda.
Event warmup:

Set up my transition area (kindly moving the chic next to me stuff to CHAINSIDE), looked at where I'd be entering from the swim & bike & exiting bike & run as well as noting that there was a massive lightpole in my transition lane. Bonus, no numbers to remember. All I had to remember was not to move my bike backwards as this would snap the elastics that were holding my bike shoes in place.

Went and hung out in the TriBal tent with new addition of comfy couch. Tried to settle nerves and keep warm. Was amazing to hear of fellow team mate who took an hour of his first attempt at the Shepp Half Iron Man. See what training can do for you!!

Put wetsuit on & headed down to the water with Catherine. I swear it was colder this year. Thankfully by the time our wave went off I had warmed up.
Swim
  • 11m 3s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

While warming up we noticed that the sky blue caps had started to assemble. It was a mad dash to the start line not helping the HR siuation which got to 180 at the thought of missing the wave start! Thankfully settling to 130 and then the gun went off.

What to say. I belive I'm a stronger swimmer than this performance. I should have beaten Catherine but I saw her and later Sam pass me. I was breathing every two - possibly because panic set in and I swallowed a fair bit of the filty bay. I felt as though I was getting no where. NO WHERE!! There was no powering through the water like last season, though I did catch a few people on the way in.
What would you do differently?:

Train! I just have to be in the pool at every opportunity. 2 new sessions have been created to cater for sprint/Oly distance for beginners and this is where I should be week in, week out. More bay swims on the cards too.
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

This is pretty slow. I should be able to take a minute off this time over the season. Nothing major, probably just a slow run out of the water. I was happy with the way I got on my bike.
What would you do differently?:

I can't pin point anything at this stage.
Bike
  • 43m 41s
  • 20 kms
  • 27.47 km/hr
Comments:

I beat Cath & Sam out of transition, but they caught me quickly and left me in their dust! My goal time was 45mins and I got this comfortably. I hope by the end of the season to be averaging over 30km/hour. I didn't want to kill myself on the bike & have nothing left on the run.
What would you do differently?:

I need to spend time on the bike & really haven't done a lot of training for this at all.
Transition 2
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

I didn't hold the tongue of my left shoe properly so I wasted time trying to pull it up again. I opened my right shoe fully and had no troubles there! Put on my hat as I ran out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Make use of the elastics laces I'd put in my shoes!!
Run
  • 31m 32s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 19s  min/km
Comments:

Sadly I think this might be a PB for 5km!! Imagine what I could do if I hadn't swam or biked!! I'm stoked with this run. I thought a goal time of 32min would be challenging, but 31.32, phew!!

I set my sights on a chic who wa a fairway in front of me but looked to be running her pace. I finally caught her and we played cat & mouse. I decided that I didn't want to waste my energy so I let her go. Just after the 2.5km mark I saw a girl walking. I told her to run with me, she did after declaring that she hated running. So do I, so do I. Rich & Christine caught up with us while on the way for their ride, so they rode with us dishing out encouragment. Rich said I looked really composed. The legs felt great, I'd say the limiting factor was my HR. It averaged 178 throughout. They left us and we pushed harder. I passed the girl I played cat & mouse with earlier and was determined to keep distance between us. Sprinted up the home straight and thought I was going to be ill before I crossed the finish line, thankfully I did so after and got a 'love your work' from a random dude. I've never lost my breakfast after a race, but I felt much better after I'd done so!!
What would you do differently?:

I can't complain.Just need to get out there and run more.
Post race
Warm down:

Mmm gatorade. Picked up my race pack, had a chat with Ruth & Catherine & headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

As usual, talent. I need to train and do so consistently. I hope to see some improvements at the Elwood race - same distance.

Event comments:

Wow I was pretty tired after the race. Definitely severely dehydrated. Ate a million pancakes for lunch, had a snooze & off to have some beer with Rich & Christine. WILL make it to swim training tomorrow morning, after an early night to bed me thinks!
