Swim
Comments: I am a slow swimmer and tried to fall in with the 11:30 - 12 minute group. Couple of people in front who were struggling. Passed a lot more people than I would have thought. Just tried to focus on staying calm and this worked well for me. What would you do differently?: Nothing really, probably could have moved forward in the line a bit. Transition 1
Comments: It had been raining and my foot slipped off the left pedal. Clipped in all right after that. What would you do differently?: Practice running and jumping on bike Bike
Comments: First few miles were great with a tailwind, although the surface seemed slick to me. one time a big truck went by and it felt like I would be blown off the road. Kind of scary with the rain and wind. Got rained on a couple of times. At one point the sky kind of opened up and it felt like about 5 seconds of hail before turning into a stinging rain. These were the worst conditions I have ever ridden in. What would you do differently?: Did the best I could under the conditions. Transition 2
Comments: I was very cold and my legs were tired after pushing on the bike. Fingers didn't want to work. What would you do differently?: Weather related, probably nothing I could do about it. Run
Comments: My legs were shot; I took a lot of walk breaks. What would you do differently?: More bike/run brick work Post race
Warm down: I was freezing cold and shivering. Got bike and gear loaded up and sat in my car to warm up a bit, then went back in the civic center and changed into dry clothes. Still cold though. They had Subway sandwiches down in the gymnasium and I just kind of sat on a bench and ate my sandwich. Watched some of the awards but it was late and I had a long drive back to Springfield. Felt good to get back in the car and crank the heater. What limited your ability to perform faster: I knew I was somewhat undertrained, so feel pretty good about my times given the difficult weather conditions. Event comments: Definitely plan to come back in 2011. I opted to participate as an Athena; in retrospect that might not have been the best decision, as I was the oldest (48) in the group. Nothing too special since the race wasn't until 12:30. I live 1 1/2 hours from Sullivan. Got on the road around 9:30. Rained on the way up. Got to the Civic Center, found a spot in transition and got set up. Cold. I think the temp was in the high 50s or low 60s and there was a lot of wind.
Swam some laps in the pool. Water was really warm and I hated to get out.
