Swim
Comments: Pushed off the wall and immediately had goggles completely full of water. Debated whether or not to stop and clean them out, should have. Swam the entire 300M blind, almost ran into the wall a couple times. Did hit the lane lines often, better safe than sorry I guess. Dissapointed in the swim time should be much faster for a 300M swim. On the upside, lol put 1:37 for my 100M time, didn't catch the guy in front of me and the person behind me didn't catch me so I guess we all fudged appropriately. What would you do differently?: Not get goggles full of water. Transition 1
Comments: Sat there and debated whether or not to put on my jacket, I ended up pulling it on and it came on rather easily. Plan was to plop down, get socks on, make sure they were straight, etc, but too much mud to do that. Forgot to zip it up though. Carried bike on my shoulder cyclocross style due to all the mud. Cleats completely filled up which isn't too great for speedplays What would you do differently?: Have a plan and stick with it. Bike
Comments: Avg Watts 223 Max Watts 608 Avg HR 161 Not sure what happened here. I did have to hop off the bike to zip up jacket and get mud out of cleats so I could clip in. On my road bike, no problem zipping up jacket while riding, not so much on the tri bike. Couldn't seem to get in a rhythm, was so used to trying to ride at a specific wattage, wasn't sure when to back off and when to go all out. All that internal debate was rather stupid since it was only a 10 mile ride, kinda figured that out about 8 miles in but by then it was too late. Was a pretty nice course, good roads. Really gusty at points, leaning hard into the wind at some points since I was being blown around. At one point riding directly into the wind which slowed things down a bit also. What would you do differently?: For a 10 mile race, ride as hard as humanly possible, my avg watts for a sub 30 minute ride was less than my FTP... Transition 2
Comments: With all the mud, couldn't do a flying dismount since I needed to keep my bike shoes on. Thought I was faster than this, not sure what took so long What would you do differently?: Not be a spaz. Run
Comments: Mile 1:7:37/Mile Mile 2:7:32/Mile Mile 3:7:17/Mile Overall 7:25/Mile Legs felt really good. Going out there was a kid, turned out he was 13 (1/3 my age...), that came in right behind me on the bike, I had passed him on the last hill. He made it out of transition faster than I did. He kept pulling away from me but I was able to keep him in my sights. Not sure why it became my goal to beat that kid to the finish but it did. Mile 2 started to pull closer and closer, ended up passing him in the last 10th of a mile or so. Getting so much faster on the run but have so much further to go, funny 7:25 pace doesn't even get me in the top 50% of my age group, need to get to that sub 20 min for sprints. Still good though, haven't really been working on speed at all. Never passed so many people on the run, didn't get passed once. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: Crossed the finish line, shook hands with the 13 year old and thanked him for the motivation. Ate some BBQ, waited for Sam to finish. She ended up 3rd in her AG, way to go! What limited your ability to perform faster: As always I am a head case when racing, all my prep, experience, etc, seems to go right out the window. Event comments: Fun race. Nice to meet a couple folks. Long drive but needed to get in some warmup before Lonestar. Last updated: 2010-01-31 12:00 AM

This was a warmup race to get ready for Lonestar next month. Sam and I drove to my parents in Stafford on Friday night. Got up at 0445 and drove 3 hrs to Smithfield to race.
Arrived around 8:30, picked up packet, body marked etc, was pretty cold so started the internal debate on whether or not to throw on a jacket and possibly gloves on the way out. Finally decided to throw my cycling jacket on the bike just in case.
It had rained the night before so everything was pretty muddy, lots of mud in parking area, saw someone stuck at one point and had to be pulled out. Big mud puddle on the bike and run outs.
Talked to meherczeg before the race, was getting ready to watch her whoop up on some dude whose stuff was piled up on hers. We talked, figured she should move it, then the guy came right back and moved it back on top of her stuff, lol.
Sam and I ran about a mile or so then sat around until about 10 after 10, race started at 1000 and my start time was 1042. Drank a bottle of ininit for some calories and ate a power bar.
